About this listen
Excerpt: “Mama, I won’t cause any problems, I promise,” pleaded twenty-year-old Elizabeth Bennet pleaded as she struggled to comprehend what her parents were saying during their argument in the family’s small parlor. Her father’s words were easy enough to catch, but her mother’s shrill voice was garbled and beginning to give Lizzy a headache. While twisting her head between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, the tears began to spill from her eyes and down her cheeks.
Sitting on the settee next to Elizabeth, her elder sister and dearest friend and companion Jane Bennet, took her hand in support. “Mama,” Jane interjected, “Lizzy attending the local assemblies has never been an issue before. Why should she not attend the autumn assemble this evening?”
“Because, Jane dearest, we have never had a wealthy and eligible new neighbor attending our local assembly before. Mr. Bingley must be given only the very best impression of you and our family. We can’t have your sister embarrassing us the first time he meets you.”
With her mother’s more subdued speech and her turning to face Jane, and thus herself, Lizzy was able to understand each painful word that Mrs. Bennet had spoken. Blinking away the tears and turning her head, she looked directly at Jane before acquiescing to her mother’s demands. “It will be fine, Janie. Papa says he is an affable young man, and Charlotte Lucas says that Sir William reports that he is also handsome. Mama is right. You will make a splendid impression on him. And I will be able to meet him after he has fallen in love with you.” She finished by giving his beautiful but shy sister a teasing smile.

Story
This novel of 67,000 words is a sweet and clean variation of Pride and Prejudice written from a Christian perspective. The characters meet as children and grow in understanding of themselves and each other over the period of Elizabeth at age five until her marriage. There are no super-villains to wreak havoc on our heroes or heroines in this low-angst retelling. Except: Summer 1796 - On a mild summer day in Hertfordshire, Lady Anne Darcy sat in the shade of the terrace overlooking the generous expanse of manicured lawn behind their leased estate. Netherfield Park was an agreeable location ...

Story
As a child, Elizabeth Bennet's years were split into two distinct segments: her normal life with four rambunctious sisters in Hertfordshire, and summers in Derbyshire on the estate of her father's friend Mr. Darcy. Summertime meant peaks to explore, horses to ride, a library full of books, and friends unlike anyone she knew at home. It was an idyllic escape - until the year that everything came crashing down and summers at Pemberley became no more than a fading memory. When Fitzwilliam Darcy walks into the Meryton Assembly half a decade later, Elizabeth doesn't know how to reconcile the two...

I much prefer the sharpest criticism of a single intelligent man to the thoughtless approval of the masses. ELIZABETH BENNET is determined that she will put a stop to her mother’s plans to marry off the eldest Bennet daughter to Mr. Collins, the Longbourn heir, but a man that Mr. Bennet considers an annoying dimwit. Hence, Elizabeth disguises herself as Jane and repeats her vows to the supercilious rector as if she is her sister, thereby voiding the nuptials and saving Jane from a life of drudgery. Yet, even the “best laid plans” can often go awry. FITZWILLIAM DARCY is desperate to ...

Mrs. Bennett is mean, as usual.
Elizabeth and her twin brother contract scarlet fever. The boy dies but Elizabeth recovers. Unfortunately Elizabeth suffers hearing loss from the fever. She is not completely deaf, but does suffer dissabilities, which her mother finds embarrassing. She even wants to send Elizabeth away to an asylum so people won't know of her problem. Mrs. Bennett is also angry that her sole male child, Elizabeth's twin, dies but Elizabeth lives. Darcy meets Elizabeth. He ends up in love with Elizabeth, of course, and does not find her loss of hearing objectionable at all.
