Publisher's summary
The year was 1957. Elvis Presley was on top of the world. Just 22 at the time, he was not just the King of Rock 'n' Roll but a handsome prince who had his choice of all the fair maidens in the land, and yet, like a true fairy tale, he fell in love with Anita Wood, a rising musical talent with the looks of a beauty queen. Anita put her own career aside to be with Elvis, her first love, and would be his steady girlfriend for the next five years.
Once upon a Time: Elvis and Anita is a heartfelt memoir of Anita's life with Elvis from 1957 through 1962. Written by Jonnita Brewer Barrett, Anita's daughter, the book takes listeners back to a magical time that many believe was among the best years of Elvis' life: His career was taking off, he had just purchased Graceland (where Anita lived with Elvis for most of their time together), and life seemed incredibly good.
Through her daughter, Anita recaptures the joy and excitement of two young people in love. She shares many key moments that bonded her with Elvis' family, including the shocking news that he had been drafted by the army in 1958 and the devastation he felt later that year by the sudden death of his beloved mother, Gladys.
Once upon a Time traces Anita's own journey in show business, which included appearances with such entertainment legends as Jack Paar, Buddy Hackett, Andy Williams, and Dick Van Dyke. But it also revisits some of the most painful memories of Anita's life, from the lengths that Elvis' manager took to shield their relationship from the public to the heartache and betrayal that made her realize that the fairy tale had to end.

Gary Tillery presents a coherent view of Elvis' thoughts through such anecdotes and other recorded facts. We learn, for instance, that Elvis read thousands of books on religion; that his crisis over making mindless movies like Girl Happy led him to writers such as Gurdjieff, Krishnamurti, and Helena Blavatsky; and that, while driving in Arizona, an epiphany inspired him to learn Hindu practice. Elvis came to believe that the Christ shines in everyone and that God wanted him to use his light to uplift people.

Story
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Story
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Story
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them.

Perfect storytelling.
This was done so well. I love the way she read it it really felt like you were there with these two young lovers. She didn’t brush any negativity under the rug. Her mama is a very honest woman with high morals values and ethics. It’s too bad Elvis didn’t have the same. I think this is the seventh book I’ve read about Elvis by the people who loved him the most. He certainly did attract kind, loving, supportive, loyal friends and lovers into his life. I’m still crying after finishing the story even though, of course , we all know how it ends. Just heartbreaking. Rest in peace Elvis, we love & miss you.

Once upon a time by Anita Wood
I loved hearing Anita’s daughter read the text because she sounded so much like her mother. I remember when Anita was with Elvis one could tell how much she loved him. Her eyes were joyful so full of love. I hurt for her when things went awry. Elvis was always such a child. I know he regretted it. He said so in so many ways. The title says it all. Thank you

Very Good!
Although there are several factual errors contained in the book, nevertheless, the book reveals previously unknown information. I lived and went to college in Memphis and Anita reminds me of many fine Southern belles in her personality, beliefs, and values. Her daughter does her proud.
In my view, Elvis made a major mistake by choosing Priscilla over Anita. Only he knows why he ever became romantically involved with a 14-year-old girl when he was 24 in the first place and why he became obsessed with her to the detriment of his relationship with Anita. He chose poorly and paid dearly.
