About this listen

Book 11 in the Gaunt's Ghosts Series

Given a vital mission and beset by vicious enemies from without and terrifying ghosts from within, the Tanith First must prepare to give their all - for only in death does duty end.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Gaunt's Ghosts meet literal ghosts in a haunted house story that ties back into many events from the series so far, and gives the Tanith – and the reader – closure on some of the most tragic deaths...

THE STORY

The Sabbat Worlds Crusade has reached the fortress-world of Jago, and the Tanith First are given a vital – and dangerous – mission to defend a key pass against the enemy, garrisoned in an ancient mansion, the Hinzerhaus. Strange things are happening there. There are voices on the wind, and people are disappearing. With the enemy outside and ghosts within, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his men must face their fears – for only in death does duty end.

Written by Dan Abnett. Narrated by Toby Longworth. Run time 11hrs 29mins (approx).

One of the grittiest yet!

Abnett and Longworth have done it again!
I only wish they could do it faster! This series is fantastic. There were moments I thought he was recycling plot points but they turned out to be great twists and a satisfying but tragic ending.

Gaunt and the REAL ghosts

So, saying this is my least favorite of the series(so-far) is still saying that it's pretty damned good. I don't mind not having all the answers, but the story starts in media res and never really explains the reason for what the Ghosts are doing, other than "oops." Which fine, up to a point, but there are several questions that are never answered. I don't need all the answers, but it honesty feels like Abnett - whom I adore as a writer - had a good idea for a creepy story and didn't feel like worrying about the why. And to be fair, it is a really creepy, mood-filled story. There's some avant-garde style writing Abnett plays with that I didn't particularly care for, but that's more a personal choice than anything, I think. All in all it's solid a solid read for any fans of the Ghosts. Not my favorite, but still...pretty damned good. Toby Longworth could read the phonebook and make it sound amazing and doesn't disappoint, here.

It grew on me.

I did not immediately love this book, as I have done for previous books (Necropolis for example), but stick with me, O.K.? I did not love this book at the half-way point, but I was starting to like it. It wasn't until the last few hours of listening that I started to really love this book. It is a slow burn, and I mean SLOW. By the time I got to the end I would say I genuinely loved this one. Not like the aforementioned Necropolis book, but in its own unique way. until about the last two hours of the book I had resigned myself to skip the review option, and now...this!

I don't want to spoil this one, but Abnett really pulled this one off. Only In Death starts by letting you think this will be a 'monster house' sort of story, and it kind of is, but not really, but it absolutely is, and it really is not, but it definitely is, or is it? Yeah, I know, not remotely helpful and it's very confusing. And yet, I still LOVED this book! it's hard writing a review with out spoiling anything. by the mid point you're not sure what is going on, and by the end many of the problems are resolved. That said, the very end of the book just blows wide open a couple of loose ends and I know I will likely never get the closure to those questions that I so desperately seek. I love this book. Not at first, but it grew on me. This won't be loved by everyone, but it was exactly what I needed!

One of the best in the series.

Only in death is up there with Necropolis as one of the best Gaunt's Ghost novels.

The Horror

Excellent entry to the Gaunt series and honestly, maybe one of my favorite 40K books. It is sinister, completely different from previous military novels in the series. Recommend.

One of the very best in the series

Although slow to start, Dan Abnett's latest installment is an impressive feat of paying off every set up, some of them many books ago. Just when I felt like I could detect a turn into past formulas the narrative turned on itself again and this became one of the more truly emotional Black Library books I've ever read. Toby Longworth of course is also brilliant throughout in his voice performance. Somehow these two keep knocking it out of the park.

The Voice acting was especially good

The Voice acting was especially good but this actor has been voicing this series as I’ve listened to it, and he changed some of the peoples voices. Which can make an already chaotic story, a bit harder to follow.
