About this listen

AN INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER

In this inspiring culmination of Diana Beresford-Kroeger’s life’s work as a botanist, biochemist, biologist and poet of the global forest, she delivers a challenge to us all to dig deeper into the science of forests and the ways they will save us from climate breakdown—and then do our part to plant and protect them.

As the last child in Ireland to receive a full Druidic education, Diana Beresford-Kroeger has brought an unusual and ancient holistic attitude to the science of trees, which has led her to many fresh insights into how closely we are tied to one another and to the natural world. Her influential message is to pay rapt attention to trees, because they are the green heart of the living world. Forests are our lungs, our medicine, our oxygen and the renewal of our soil. Planting the right trees in the right places, protecting the last virgin forests and working to create new ones is our best means to ensure a future for our children and grandchildren on this burning earth.

Each of the essays gathered in Our Green Heart show us a slice of the natural world through Diana’s unique lens, illuminating the way our health, individually and as a species, is tied to the health of the forest—a tie we ignore at our peril. She maps the science that still needs to be done—there is so much we don’t know about the ways trees and forests work—but also, eloquently, shows us the path to survival that her own science has revealed, the “bioplan” or blueprint for the connectivity of life in nature. If we realize that even the flowerpot on our doorstep is a natural habitat, and plant it according to its bioplan, we will be aiding and abetting life rather than destroying it.

A work of art, a scientific achievement, a profound prescription for saving ourselves and the planet. She's a Living Treasure

Dr. Diana Beresford-Kroeger is my absolute favorite author in the world. At 80 years old, she's a Living Treasure for our troubled times. Her message about Forests is supremely important for all of us for all time. If you're thinking of listening to this one, I promise you'll be happy. Her reading of her own words and stories is exquisite, her voice delightful with a lilting Irish accent. Every word is infused with layers of meaning and emotion that takes her audiobooks to a depth untouchable by reading alone. She's an unfettered brilliant scientist with a photographic memory, earning her first doctorate by age 21, she was researching and teaching climate change by the early 70s, completely self-motivated. She's also a poet and accomplished artist among other things and has a 160 acre arboretum in Northern Ontario of rare and endangered tree species. The depth of her knowledge of trees and human medicine.. and how trees and humans are related..is pretty much unsurpassed.

Her childhood was fascinating, a real-life fairy tale. Anyone with an interest in ancient Celtic culture will be thrilled to see through the magic window of her orphaned childhood a view into the last intact Celtic village...as the elders downloaded all their wisdom for young Diana to preserve and share, her story is somehow personal for the whole world. Her subsequent life merges all the ancient wisdom she learned as a youth with modern science to produce the most important information the world needs now to survive climate change and an increasingly toxic environment... by befriending trees.

It's all about trees and forests and we can't live without them. She can prove it! And she does in a way that's enthralling, enchanting, fascinating...every word. As a non-scientist i especially appreciate the way she explains really complex processes in a way I GET, using metaphors and stories, her teaching ability is exceptional and enthusiastic.

This is more than a book read by the author. It's a work of art, a scientific achievement, a prescription for saving the world, a love letter to forests and our shining Earth home. It's a reminder that Nature is our birthright and our responsibility. And for any young scientists, it's also a bucket list of what still needs to be done to increase our understanding of Forests. Don't just listen to this audiobook, tell your friends too and then go plant some native trees. Go forest bathing. And protect every mature stand of forest that remains

A Clear Warning

The blend of scientific knowledge, wisdom and poetic expression of this writer was both powerful and profound. Her style reminds me of Father Thomas Berry.
