Publisher's summary

The still-unfolding story of America's Constitution is a history of heroes and villains - the flawed visionaries who inspired and crafted liberty's safeguards, and the shortsighted opportunists who defied them. Those stories are known by few today.

In Our Lost Constitution, Senator Mike Lee tells the dramatic, little-known stories behind six of the Constitution's most indispensable provisions. He shows their rise. He shows their fall. And he makes vividly clear how nearly every abuse of federal power today is rooted in neglect of this Lost Constitution. For example:

  • The Origination Clause says that all bills to raise taxes must originate in the House of Representatives, but contempt for the clause ensured the passage of Obamacare.
  • The Fourth Amendment protects us against unreasonable searches and seizures, but the NSA now collects our private data without a warrant.
  • The Legislative Powers Clause means that only Congress can pass laws, but unelected agencies now produce 99 out of every 100 of legal rules imposed on the American people.

Lee's cast of characters includes a former Ku Klux Klansman, who hijacked the Establishment Clause to strangle Catholic schools; the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who called the Second Amendment a fraud; and the revered president who began his first of four terms by threating to shatter the balance of power between Congress and the president, and who began his second term by vowing to do the same to the Supreme Court.

Fortunately, the Constitution has always had its defenders. Senator Lee tells the story of how Andrew Jackson, noted for his courage in duels and politics, stood firm against the unconstitutional expansion of federal powers. He brings to life Ben Franklin's genius for compromise at a deeply divided constitutional convention.

Solution is a bit naive

Senator Lee is right on when it comes to the founders perspective of our Constitution and its subversion by a power hungry government. However, I don't share his hopes that a few good men can restore the powers, the federal government has extracted for itself, to the people. Jefferson was right: "The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield, and government to gain ground. This process is only reversible by a revolution."

Great insight

I really appreciated this book by Senator Mike Lee. His research into the various topics was a fascinating look into the background behind the scenes as he set the stage for how the Constitution was subverted by various people. the book isn't overly long but it does cover a broad examination of critical areas where we have lost our Liberty and given far too much power to the government. If we are to be a people who self-govern we must take back our rights, or else concede that we have none but what the government tells us we have.

Understanding our Constitution is of paramount importance.

How grateful I am for Brother Lee for sharing his knowledge with his fellow citizens or rather, We the People. God bless him and his family.

Excellent, historically factual

every American should have read this entire book as well as the Constitution itself before being allowed to graduate high school. In addition to excellent content, the narrator's voice is extremely clear and easy to understand.

must read for every American!

I learned immensely about our founding document. It is imperative that we protect it. Our republic is young. It will not last if we don't know the principles upon which it was founded.

He gives me hope

He gives me hope that our freedoms and our constitutional government can be restored. He gives me hope that we can return to the way of smaller government so that it stays out of our business. He reminds me that our constitution is inspired of God and we need it more now than ever. He reminds me that freedom is never outdated. He reminds me that the only way to return to the values of the constitution is to elect people that have read it and understand it and want to govern by it. He makes me want to reread the constitution so that I can be intelligently persuasive to people who do not understand it. America can be great again, but in order to do that, We the People must return to the precepts of our great constitution.
