About this listen

"Dylan makes me laugh and makes me brave. I love Paper Doll, and I love this woman.”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Untamed

Actress and content creator Dylan Mulvaney’s honest account of her journey through girlhood

When Dylan Mulvaney came out as a woman online, she was a viral sensation almost overnight, emerging as a trailblazing voice on social media. Dylan’s personal coming-out story blossomed into a platform for advocacy and empowerment for trans people all over the world.

Through her “Days of Girlhood” series, she connected with followers by exploring what it means to be a girl, from experimenting with makeup to story times to spilling the tea about laser hair removal, while never shying away from discussing the transphobia she faced online. Nevertheless, she was determined to be a beacon of positivity.

But shortly after she celebrated day 365 of being a girl, it all came screeching to a halt when an innocuous post sparked a media firestorm and right-wing backlash she couldn’t have expected. Despite the vitriolic press and relentless paparazzi, Dylan was determined to remain loud and proud.

In Paper Doll: Notes from a Late Bloomer, Dylan pulls back the curtain of her “It Girl” lifestyle with a witty and intimate reflection of her life pre- and post-transition. She covers everything from her first big break in theater to the first time her dad recognized her as a girl to how she handled scandals, cancellations, and … tucking. It’s both laugh-out-loud funny and powerfully honest—and is a love letter to everyone who stands up for queer joy.

Editorial Review

Dylan Mulvaney’s notes on girlhood
Perhaps best known for her viral “Days of Girlhood” series on TikTok, Dylan Mulvaney’s memoir is a labor of love nearly two years in the making. Mixing journal entries with personal essays and reflections on her first year after coming out as trans—and performed by Mulvaney herself— Paper Doll is a deeply personal and heartfelt behind-the-scenes look at all the highs and lows of Mulvaney’s very public journey. Set to release around her three-year anniversary of being a girl, I cannot wait to hear what else Dylan has to share with listeners. It’s been such a joy getting to watch her grow into the woman she is online, and this audiobook is just as brave, honest, and funny as the rest of her work. —Michael C., Audible Editor

Love at first listen

I didn’t know who Dylan Mulvaney is until I came across her via Joe Locke and HRC. I’m not a social media person so I just purchased the audio book on a whim without looking her up on TikTok. Dylan is an incredibly brilliant storyteller. She has a comedic timing that’s effortless. I didn’t expect as a CIS woman to be able to relate to so many parts of her story, but I did. The mental health struggles she’s been through, the way she felt inside about being different, and the love she received from finally finding her people. I am so glad I got the audio book because the performance she gave audibly made me feel like I was chatting with my best friend. It gave even more life to the story. Super easy and entertaining-read in 1 session book. I will also be purchasing the physical book to add to my queer bookshelf.

Dylan is a Queen!!

I loved getting to hear her honest an unabashed take on your journey into woman hood. it is different and tumultuous in so many different ways for all of us. This story helped me to understand that there are still many people in this world that need to work on their ability to accept all people, and it's all of our responsibility to work towards teaching our families and friends that the word "woman" must grow to include all of our beautiful sisters even if it makes us uncomfortable, so our friends like Dylan never have to feel they stand alone.

Love this story and it's greater message! You go girl!!!

LOVED it

I loved this book. I listened to the audiobook, so I didn't get to see the images included in the print book, so I might get the paperback just to have too. I'm glad I listened to the audiobook. It was so powerful hearing this all from Dylan herself. This book took me through all the emotions. I laughed, I cried, I smiled, I was enraged; it was a roller coaster. Dylan, if you read this review, I wish I could meet you and hug you. Thank you for writing this book and allowing everyone to see into your life and heart.

I follow Dylan on the clock app, so it was kind of cool to gauge timelines and such based on videos I have seen and know what was going on behind the scenes during that time. I liked how the book was written as part journal entry and part essay. The only very minor critique that I have for this book was the use of pop culture slang. My mom wanted to listen to the book with me and I had to explain various terms. It's not a huge deal, but based on how important I feel this book is to be able to reach across various groups of people, I wish some of the terminology was more universally understood for older generations, and younger generations since I think this book will be popular for many years to come.

I liked Dylan before, but after listening to this book, I respect the hell out of her. As someone who also deals with mental health stuff, hearing the struggles she had with her mental health was so relatable. She is a bada55 b!tch and an inspiration. 5 Stars!

I ♥ Dylan

I went into this book already loving Dylan Mulvaney and feeling so much empathy for her and the sh1t this world has put her through.
I think she has a really valuable story to tell- one of trans joy and trans pain. One about the casual cruelty against trans individuals- especially trans women- who are trying to simply exist and/or express positivity towards their trans-ness.
Mulvaney, in my eyes, is a sweet and kind-hearted person who deserves that kindness to be returned. I thought this book was so beautiful and the quirky writing style felt so authentic.

Glad Your Our Sister!

Oh Dylan, I knew you'd dealt with so much, but I had no idea how much you've had to. You're so strong, bright and intelligent on top of beautiful. Thank you for sharing this with us. I laughed, I cried....with you and for you. We have so much in common. As a woman on HRT going through menopause and a forced hysterectomy, I'm going through the opposite, feeling like my womanhood has been taken and ageism from these rude kid these days. I hope you do another book later. This one was so honest and informative. I really think you should write about being trans and all the things we don't know. I learned so much just from this.

Love ya!

Thank you for your story. I know not every person’s story is the same, but I learned a little about the trans world, and a lot about this woman’s trans experience. I love and appreciate how open and honest and genuine she is. She’s so honest, her writing (and voice) keeps you hanging on.

Thank you Dylan!

Loved this book!

I think Dylan is adorable and have always supported her. I don’t personally know any trans people and wanted to learn more about her journey. This book is fantastic! She’s so funny and transparent! I laughed out loud multiple times while listening and love that the book is narrated by her. She’s so animated! It was eye opening to hear her story and the heartache she’s been through. I think everyone should read this book. I love Dylan even more after listening! Thank you for sharing your story, Dylan!!
