About this listen
Nancia is her name, NX-928 her designation. Enter a future world in which brains are connected to computers to help run cities and ships; brainless bodies or brawn do the physical work.
In the second book of the Brainship series, a new "shellperson"—someone born with grave physical disabilities that required her human body to be encased in a massive titanium column—is provided a direct link between her mind and the computer of her ship, XN-935. Nancia is now a brand-new member of the elite Courier Service of the Central Worlds, the “brainship” of the most advanced interstellar ships around. But her innocent vision of human nature is shattered on her first voyage. Nevertheless, the idealistic Nancia and her worldly-wise new “brawn” partners must band together to save the galaxy.

Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength. Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped. But that was only the beginning for Sassinak.

Story
Sassinak was 12 when the raiders came. That made her just the right age: old enough to be used, young enough to be broken. Or so the slavers thought. But Sassy turned out to be a little different from your typical slave girl. Maybe it was her unusual physical strength. Maybe it was her friendship with the captured Fleet crewman. Maybe it was her spirit. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t let her resign herself to the life of a slave. She bided her time, watched for her moment. Finally it came, and she escaped. But that was only the beginning for Sassinak.

Good book, incomplete audiobook, edited.
I have read the paperback version of this book and I have it on Kindle. Excellent story. This version however is missing parts all over the place. I think in some places, whole pages just might be missing, and in others, paragraphs.

Abridgment was actually an improvement...
I remember reading this book years ago and not liking it as much as the other books in the series. Due to scenes with sexual and emotional abuse, and occasional racist and sexist remarks, I couldn’t read through it without either pitying or raging against the characters. This recording edits out most of those scenes without removing plot points, and actually makes the book more enjoyable, in my opinion. Surprisingly, with all the cringeworthy and controversial stuff cut out, it turned out to be a fairly good detective/spy thriller set in space.

POORLY ABRIDGED - Phoenix Books Strikes Again!
I really enjoy this book (Kindle), and try to purchase / re-listen to as many excellent audiobooks as possible, however this book is Abridged (which I didn’t see in description, or on cover photo) and very poorly done at that.
So far every single book I’ve tried from Phoenix Books is also poorly transferred to audiobook format. I wish Audible a) specifically listed Un/Abridged status in description, & b) included Publisher (of Audiobook) to help us pre screen purchases.
Requesting refund!

I only buy books I know I love and will want to read over and over. It is horribly disappointing when I end up with a butchered version.

Sadly, they butchered the book and cut out a lot
If you are going to cut sections out of a book, mark that it is abridged, so I can skip it. I want the full book.

Lost to editing and bridged recordings
Wonderful writing by Anne and recording by Constance (love her voice) but lost and demeaned by editing. I have read all Anne McCaffreys' works, she will be missed, and so I am biased against this recorded edition.

I love the 'Brainship" series! The Abridged versions are awful & too much of the story is lost. Anne McCaffrey's books are well read & well loved over most of the world. How about offering us the Unabridged versions for a change???
