About this listen

Most organizations fail to pay their employees properly - not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t approach compensation with a plan. The compensation landscape is changing rapidly. If you don’t pay your employees what they’re worth, not only will your competitors leave you behind, but you’ll also leave yourself open to legal, social, and political backlash.

As an HR professional or manager, how do you navigate the confusing world of compensation?

Pay Matters is your go-to guide for demystifying the art and science of compensation. Step-by-step, David Weaver explains how to perform a detailed market analysis that reveals exactly how much each position in your organization should be paid. You’ll also learn how to develop a pay philosophy specifically tailored to your organization and strike the elusive balance between profit and labor costs. With precisely calibrated base salaries, rewards programs, and enticing incentives, you’ll be able to keep your best employees.

Don’t leave salaries open to the caprices of your organization’s senior leaders. Approach them confidently with a proven methodology. After all, pay matters.

Very basic knowledge

I was very disappointed with the lack of content. For me it was a waste of time. Maybe it would be good for someone at junior level.

Logical approach to the labor market

the narrator felt slow at first, but the information is sufficiently dense that the pacing works well.

A Fantastic Guide for Compensation Professionals

As a former Human Resources leader who played around in the compensation arena, I don't think I was ever an expert or even knew the basics of compensation management. David Weaver's book, "Pay Matters" is the book I wish I had at the time to help me understand the basics and build my skill set.

If you are a new or active Human Resources leader, this is the book for you to ensure you understand the basics. David writes clearly and easily and makes a potentially challenging topic very easy to understand.

Don't read in isolation

This book should be titled "How to view your employees as commodities." I can't count the number of times the author appeals to not getting sued as the motivation for doing something. It reads like a regulatory manual in many ways. There is some good content on foundational principles, which are certainly helpful and important. However, I would strongly recommend that you use this to understand the basic concepts and then immediately listen to Scaling Up Compensation by Verne Harnish to connect it to your strategy and values. Additionally, the narration was painful to listen to but was much better when listened to at 1.5 or even 1.7 speed in parts.
