About this listen
Provocative political commentator Arianna Huffington yanks back the curtain on the unholy alliance of CEOs, politicians, lobbyists, and Wall Street bankers who have shown a brutal disregard for those in office cubicles and on factory floors.
The media have put their fingers on pieces of the sordid puzzle, but Pigs at the Trough presents the whole ugly picture of what's really going on for the first time: a blistering, wickedly witty portrait of exactly how and why the worst and the greediest are running American business and government into the ground. Arianna Huffington turns the spotlight on the tough reforms we must demand from Washington to stop the voracious corporate predators from eating away at the very foundations of our democracy.
Devastatingly funny and powerfully indicting, Pigs at the Trough is a rousing call to arms and essential listening for all those who are outraged by the scandalous state of corporate America.

Story
America's middle class, the driver of so much of our economic success and political stability, is rapidly disappearing, forcing us to confront the fear that we are slipping as a nation - that our children and grandchildren will enjoy fewer opportunities and face a lower standard of living than we did. It's the dark flipside of the American Dream - an American Nightmare of our own making.

According to business reporter Charles Gasparino, President Obama is faking his outrage at Wall Street, and his calls for new policies to rein in banks that are "too big to fail" are just pabulum. In reality, Obama has climbed into bed with Wall Street CEOs, giving them what they want so they will support his liberal, big-government agenda.

If you asked most people what forces led to today’s unprecedented income inequality and financial crashes, no one would say the Federal Reserve. For most of its history, the Fed has enjoyed the fawning adoration of the press. When the economy grew, it was credited to the Fed. When the economy imploded in 2008, the Fed got credit for rescuing us.

Story
The dramatic story behind the most audacious power grab in American history. The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn’t past but prologue. The stunning rise, fall, and rescue of Wall Street in the bubble-and-bailout era was the coming-out party for the network of looters who sit at the nexus of American political and economic power. The grifter class - made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding - has been growing in power for a generation, transferring wealth upward through increasingly complex financial mechanisms.

Story
Roger Lowenstein explains how corporations and governments ran up ruinous pension and health-care promises to workers - promises that are now coming due and that will hit America like a tsunami if nothing is done.
Negotiating high benefits means gambling with future finances - and when the farm gets sold out from underneath major corporations or public institutions, it affects all of us, and in ways we might not imagine. With his trademark narrative panache, Lowenstein unravels the truth about how pensions work in America and illuminates the impending crisis.

In this revelatory narrative covering the years 1967 to 2017, Steven Brill gives us a stunningly cogent picture of the broken system at the heart of our society. He shows us how, over the last half-century, America's core values - meritocracy, innovation, due process, free speech, and even democracy itself - have somehow managed to power its decline into dysfunction.

Peter Schweizer's bombshell investigation reveals how Washington really works: politicians extort money from us, then use it to buy each other's votes. Our legislators' desire for cash influences everything-from how they write laws to when they vote on a bill... Extortion finally makes clear why Congress is so dysfunctional: it's all about making money, not making law.

In 2008 the US Treasury put Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into a life-support state known as "conservatorship" to prevent their failure - and worldwide economic chaos. The two companies, which were always controversial, have become a battleground. Today, Fannie and Freddie are profitable again but still in conservatorship. Their profits are being redirected toward reducing the federal deficit, which leaves them with no buffer should they suffer losses again.

Revealing and Sarcastic
While the information in this book is revealing and extensive, the writing comes off as extraordinarily sarcastic. I'm listening to it as I write this and I move between outrage and irritation. While I consider myself a member of the "left", this is a piece of militant liberalism and hurts the cause as much as it helps it. I can't help but feel that the information and stories in this book would have been better served by a different reader reading information that was framed in a different way.

Another eye-opening expose
The major scandals discussed in Pigs at the Trough are widely known, but the book illuminates many less-well known scandals as well, showing the extent to which greed, and callous disregard for the devastation caused by that greed, has become a part of American corporate culture. Ms. Huffington uses the pigs metaphor to powerful and amusing effect. Especially shocking is her insider perspective on the dubious workings of Boards of Directors and the extent of Congressional/business incestuousness. The only down side to this audiobook is that the narrator is not Arianna Huffington, whose appealing and interesting voice would have been far preferable to that of the actual reader, whose voice is an odd combination of affected cynical sophistication and cuteness, sounding like a cross between Jackie Kennedy and Betty Boop.

Dated, But Sadly Still Relevant
This is a good rundown of corporate greed, political corruption, and how they intermixed during the W Bush Administration. The depressing truth is that the crimes and moral travestries we see within the US Congress and Trump Administration are almost identical mirror images.
