Publisher's summary

This program is read by the author with a special appearance from his mom.

An intimate and light-hearted memoir by viral sensation and three-time Emmy-nominated musical comedian Randy Rainbow that takes listeners through his life—the highs, the lows, the lipstick, the pink glasses, and the show tunes

Randy Rainbow, the man who conquered the internet with a stylish pair of pink glasses, an inexhaustible knowledge of Broadway musicals, and the most gimlet-eyed view of American politics this side of Mark Twain finally tells all in Playing with Myself, a memoir sure to cause more than a few listeners to begin singing one of his greatest hits like “A Spoonful of Clorox” or “Cover Your Freakin’ Face”.

As Randy has said, “There’s so much fake news out there about me. I can’t wait to set the record straight and finally give people a peek behind the green screen.” And set the record straight he does. Playing with Myself is a firsthand account of the journey that led Randy Rainbow from his childhood as the over-imaginative, often misunderstood little boy who carried a purse in the second grade to his first job on Broadway as the host at Hooters and on to the creation of his trademark comedy character. In chapters titled “Pajama Bottoms” (a look back at the days when he wore pajama bottoms on his head to pretend he was Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz), “Yes, It’s My Real Name, Shut Up!” (no explanation necessary...) and “Pink Glasses” (a rose-colored homage to his favorite accessory), Playing with Myself is a memoir that answers the question “Can an introverted musical theatre nerd with a MacBook and a dream save the world, one show tune at a time?”

Editor's Pick

Gurl, get your pink glasses!
Filled with his trademark humor and charm, and featuring a truly eye-catching title, Playing with Myself encapsulates everything I love about celebrity memoirs. From the juicy tidbits of his life and love to a glimpse behind his green screen, Randy Rainbow holds nothing back in this dishy tell-all. Puns and musical anecdotes aside, it’s also an honest and heartfelt exploration of his life and struggles, and a tribute to the women who inspired him. It beautifully celebrates courage, breaking the mold, and loving your authentic self, all told by the comedian himself, and featuring a special guest appearance from his mom, Gwen. It’s the perfect introduction to the man behind those fabulous pink glasses. —Michael C., Audible Editor

Every bit as wonderful as I knew it would be

Ever the entertainer, Randy Rainbow shares his story “so far” with humor and warmth and poignancy. I laughed…I cried…I had a party!
Loved every minute of it. So grateful for all the joy he has brought to the world and wish him nothing but the best! Can’t wait to see what new adventures he shares next—long live the Queen!

YAAAAAAAS QUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a truly FABULOUS *wink* candid look at the man behind the persona so many of us love, the unexpected medicine we all needed for the past 6 years and counting. It is a real treat to hear his own narration, not to mention the occasional easter egg of a recording or... something extra special later in the book. I think I was most surprised and touched by his emotion when talking about certain sad events in his personal life. Many of us can certainly relate to losing loved ones, whether they have two legs or four. I won't lie, I actually cried while listening to this. It's also nice to hear his opinions on comedy and its constant evolution to change with the tastes and morality of the audience. Learning things in this book makes me appreciate him even more as an artist and as a person. For those who don't know who this guy is, I suggest you go to YouTube and search his name. Pick a parody, any one, and enjoy this self-made comedian who's much more than just a "parody artist." A perfect introduction is his "Covfefe" parody, which in my opinion sums up his entire style. Then definitely check out this memoir, and get ready for some big names of stage and screen to make appearances as what would become great PERSONAL friends of his, and that's not being sarcastic.

Sooooo Much Fun!

Having been a huge fan since the first Cell Block Tango, it was so wonderful to hear all the back stories as he found his way to becoming a sensation. Full of heart and humor just like the author himself. Thoroughly enjoyed listening.

Does not disappoint! Loved it!

Love hearing all about how we got this treasure of a human being. So glad I got the audio version as Randy is the best at delivering exactly how he feels whether discussing his Dad, his cat, Carol Burnett, or his work.

Over the moon for Randy Rainbow!!✨🌈✨

I loved this book from start to finish, and I would recommend it to everyone, especially Donald Jessica Trump.
Randy brings his full emotional, hilarious, authentic self to his book reading. At one point — I won’t tell you which one — he choked up with grief as he was retelling a heartbreaking moment in his life, and I found myself crying with him.
There were aspects of the book I could totally relate to and others that I could not (like fame and fortune to start) and but I found Randy Rainbow incredibly entertaining and utterly human every step of the way. I laughed. I cried. It became a part of me.

Not to be Missed

Randy is fabulous, much better heard than read. Most memorable is tearful moment is when he has to put his beloved cat down. if you don't shed a tear or two, you have never loved or lost a pet. Tossed liberally throughout the book is the "F" word. if that bothers you, you will miss listening to a wonderful book. I warned you.

Randy Fucking Rainbow

🌈Beyond gratitude🌈RR! You help so many, you helped me.🌈 There ain’t no one like you and the universe thanks you for this hilarious and poignant book! P.S.~ I could sing (not greatly) every lyric to Funny Girl by age 12, and made my Dad take us all to NYC so I could find B. 💋💋💋💋💋
