Ibi Zoboi
In a timely update of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, National Book Award finalist Ibi Zoboi skillfully balances cultural identity, class, and gentrification against the heady magic of first love in her vibrant reimagining of this beloved classic.
A smart, funny, gorgeous retelling of Pride and Prejudice, starring all characters of color.
Don't miss the audiobook, read by Elizabeth Acevedo, the beloved author and narrator of The Poet X, winner of an Odyssey Honor and an AudioFile Earphones Award winner.
Zuri Benitez has pride. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable.
When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding.
But with four wild sisters pulling her in different directions, cute boy Warren vying for her attention, and college applications hovering on the horizon, Zuri fights to find her place in Bushwick’s changing landscape, or lose it all.
Ibi Zoboi's Pride is a strong option for summer reading and for sharing in a classroom or for homeschooling.

A lot of that is due, I think, to the way the author alludes to Pride and Prejudice, but tells a rich, contemporary, believable story using modern day issues like gentrification and social media.
Lovable characters and a fabulous narrator made me want to listen in one sitting/make it go on longer.
Such Fun!

Acevedo did a marvelous job as the narrator. Every character had a distinct voice, and I never had to guess who was speaking. Lastly, I love how multifaceted Zoboi’s characters were. She shows the many faces of the black community through her characters. I felt like I was seeing my own family. Read it. Read it. Please Read it.

I also relate to the value systems and experiences of both main characters. The boldness of Z and the otherness of Darius. I grew up with more worldly experiences, but still have pride in the local love of neighborhood flowershops, stores and churches.
Read it and read it again! It's worth it!

I have read another book by Zoboi and love her writing style and her poetry. I suspect she’s going to be on my list of favorite authors as I read more of her books.
If you’re a fan of P&P, I think you’ll enjoy this.
Love it!!

reimagines womanhood, the journey of self-discovery, a coming of age story in the grit and cultures of Brooklyn as well as updating a "Classic" into something all her own. Acevedo is the PERFECT voice for the story with her NYC flair and voice.
