About this listen

Wherever Sean Drummond goes, it seems that the JAG officer leaves a trail of political fallout in his wake. So when his superiors get an opportunity to loan him to a prestigious law firm, they jump on it, hoping he'll soak up the nuances of civilian lawyering. But almost immediately, dark clouds appear when Sean's predecessor in the loan-out program is murdered. Then Sean begins to sense something amiss with the firm's biggest client, a telecom behemoth with large defense contracts. Now, he must survive in D.C.'s buttoned-down lawyer culture long enough to stop the killer, and long enough to discover why his firm and its top client are willing to kill anyone who gets in their way.

Critic reviews

"In his previous Drummond novels, Haig proved he could compete on the espionage front with the likes of Ken Follett; with this outing, he matches David Baldacci for Beltway intrigue." ( Booklist)

My favorite so far

I'm finally hooked on Joe Barrett and I think there are two narrators on the only one I haven't listened to. Ain't that the luck!

This is my favorite so far and hope Haig will continue and return to Barrett. He ought to at least let Drummand get the girl.

But the story was good and the first of the series I carried with me all through the house and yard until I finished.

Still love the rude sarcasm which seemed a bit upgraded in this one.

Very good read

One of the things that really carries the story is Joe Barrett was the narrator. I liked the book so much, I wanted more so I just ordered the next in the series. Then I noticed that they changed narrators (Scott Brick). I'll see if he can carry it off........if not I'll return it.

Bravo Brian Haig!

I don’t know how he does it. Of course, as a career military man, it is understandable how he has his finger on the pulse of all things army… But he was not a jag officer, and yet, coming from a soldier who was (As well as a special operations officer with both special forces tab and the Ranger tab) He sure hits the nail on the head when it comes to Sean Drummond. The insouciant wit of Major Drummond, the clever repartee, and the self effacing asides, make him one of my favorite action heroes. Naturally, for any of the thrill genre, one must suspend a degree of belief, nonetheless, Haig stays within the lane of “it could happen“ without too many swerves into oncoming traffic. As a mild criticism, I don’t believe I’ll ever get used to Joe Barretts voice As the guy behind Sean Drummond, but hats off to him with his other voices. He did a particularly good job with the female English secretary. One of those books I regret came to an end.

First Class Entertainment

What did you love best about Private Sector?

Brian Haig's relentless wit forced me laugh out loud in the most embarrassing moments.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The lead character, Sean Drummond, though sharing some fairly predictable traits with central characters of my most favorite series, excels in humor. Of course, Joe Barrett's timing delivers masterfully.

Which scene was your favorite?

After about a half hour of thought, I can't single out one scene. It is all hugely entertaining.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

That would be a delicious opportunity.

Any additional comments?

I am looking forward to listening to the complete series over and over.

The Most Laughter of the Series,

Joe Barrett is irreverent when telling this story so you laugh out loud and get laughter when you least expect it. His CIA joke has you howling and replaying it, ch 50.
If you are not in the mood to laugh, pick another story in this series.
This is my fave reader of this series, and can only hope author realizes the gift this narrator adds to his tales.
I do use 1.25x speed to match author's intent.
This is a very gifted author, as other reviewers, Shelly has stated.
Each story brings out a different talent the author has and it is showcased in that tale, hence you end up buying the full series even though some of the narrators are not as talented in representing our hero, Sean as Joe Barrett.
Were my comments of help?

Best so far

I have to admit that I didn’t like the narrator at the start of this series but he became the voice of the character.

Another Great Sean Drummond book.

I have always love the irreverent and humorous character of Sean Drummond.
This is another great book. Someone is killing young attractive women in Washington DC. They are connected; Sean figures this out and solves the case. And gets the girl at the end too.
National Security concerns (CIA) demand that Sean let the perpetrators and planners alone - however, he figures out a way to avenge these murders. There are few areas where the story drags a bit; but overall the audio performance is stellar.
Loved this book.
