Publisher's summary

A gripping true story, Prodigal Daughter narrates a family's darkest time through addiction and their journey toward healing. Father and daughter team, Rob Koke - founder and Senior Pastor of Shoreline Church - and Danielle pull back the curtain on the mind-numbing power of addiction and offer hope and real strategies for those longing for freedom.

Unashamed and heartwarming, Danielle shares intimately about her teenage alcohol abuse and dependence on marijuana and Adderall. She offers a rare, first-person insight into the mental and emotional effects of addiction, and what it takes to get and stay clean. Rob tells about his struggle with his daughter's addiction, dealing with its effect on their family, and the reality of what it looks like to love someone battling addiction in your own home. He explores common questions family members ask like:

  • Why can't they just stop?
  • Why did they turn to drugs when I gave them everything I could?
  • Where did I go wrong?
  • How do I help without enabling?

In a raw, real-time glimpse, father and daughter reveal the vulnerable letters they shared with each other during Danielle's rehab. With transparency, Rob and Danielle disarm the shame factor, and share lessons and resources to prevent and overcome setbacks.

This audiobook is your field guide in the battle of addiction. Whether you're longing for freedom or helping a loved one along the journey toward recovery, you're not alone. Danielle and Rob's story will challenge you with truth, equip you with strategies for the journey, and infuse your heart with hope.

Great book!

Loved it! I gave always enjoyed Pastor Rob's sermons but wasn't sure whether the book would be good. After all, not everyone is an author. I was very happy to discover that this collaboration between him and his daughter is inspirational, humorous, deeply moving & thought provoking.

A sincere story

I purchased this book on 10/4 and I've listened to it 3 times already between 4th and 7th. You may be asking, "Is it that good?"

I don't think that is the correct question. Is this a sincere telling of one family's story of addiction amongst thousands of other addiction stories... then yes it is. It is extremely sincere.

Thankfully, it is not a gruesome story as I have had the opportunity through Celebrate Recovery to hear many addiction stories and the severe tragic impact on individuals and their families. No, this is not gruesome when compared to others but this story still comes with destruction, manipulation, lies, loss and fear... lots and lots of fear. Pastor Rob makes the statement of how flawed it is to compare one story to another as the comparison can either lead to denial or hopelessness. I believe that to be true.

This is one story among thousands of stories that irrespective of color, race, gender and socio-economic backgrounds, addiction can hit. Even in what appears to be a good Christian home as if a good Christian home should be excluded from the allure of sin.

My Pastor, Pastor Rob and his daughter Danielle tell their story unashamedly to allow us a view into one addict's world and how she Danielle chose recovery. Recovery is a choice and Danielle shares that her choice was rooted in knowing who she is in Christ Jesus. Recovery is possible for anyone who intentionally chooses it.

Some golden nuggets are available in this story. Surprisingly to me, I have a different perspective on my Pastor and his daughter. I'm still processing what that is but for sure it's a positive one.

The narrators of this book were so spot on and certainly reminded me of Pastor and Danielle.

Prodigal Daughter is worth a listen/read. Thank you Pastor and Danielle for sharing.

Compelling & Inspiring

I could not put it down! Relatable and encouraging. I recognized areas I could change, specifically in the area of codependency.

Brutal. Beautiful. Honest.

This book isn’t just for addicts or or their loved ones. This book is for everyone. It took courage for the authors to share this story and anyone will benefit from their story.

This is a book/story that is worth your time. It is time well spent. You will be better for it.

I knew I needed to hear this. God had me do it!

This was very thorough and unique. Very honest and raw. I love it. I truly wish every minister and pastor out there would admit to us lay people that you’re not the best at everything too and what you do and how you really feel and how you deal with those feelings and situations that are tough. So the average person wouldn’t always think pastors are perfect and then when they do fall it’s a huge boom to the Christian world. Paul admitted himself why does he want to do or do what he knows He shouldn’t do? It’s because of the flesh. He was up front with us about it. But then said he turns to the Lord. That’s what you did and thank you.
I can really in so many ways relate to the father only as a mother but my daughter was once similar to Danielle in many areas of her life at the starting age and a lot of the same issues she faced going from a Christian school to public, her father being a minister/evangelist who wasn’t in our(her) lives since he left us when she was small, (we were in the way of his ministry to start) and her older brother whom she looked up to for protection started having his teenage issues, then he left. So since then she’s been on that road now since 1999. Her brother left 2000 for army and He hasn’t been in either one of our lives since Dec/2001.
She’s had so many bottoms and relapses and experienced her fiancé’s death, another boy OD’ed in her home, to now, losing her child. In hearing your story, in so many ways it was a repeat of her /my story only I don’t have $ to send her to a good Rehab, but she did go to a few and has had bouts of sobriety and gets so great and finally faith back to God but then she just can’t seem to get level-hearted enough to stay out of a relationship and every time when she gets low that’s when a guy comes along because she craves being told she’s loved /liked, beautiful, etc, but they’re always the same guy just a different face. She back to drugs and this last time in a manner of just maybe 4 months lost everything. Her, son, her job, her home. She’s 35. I pray Lord I keep giving her to you. Now I don’t have a grandchild. And the darn thing is being on disability I can’t do anything for her anymore. And her dad does nothing because He doesn’t want to enable. But I think he’s overboard doing nothing. You did a lot for your daughter. More than my own mother or father would do for me even. Your daughter is so very blessed. Very blessed. And wise. Everything Danielle shared is right. What you shared was very encouraging. Just wish I could get my daughter to read this or get to the point she knows that God Loves her and that’s all that she needs to make her feel valuable and loved.
Please pray for her.

Relatable for sure!

I have also read the book high achiever and never thought that another book could be so gripping or relatable to myself-but I was wrong - it is powerful and meaningful and not just to addicts and their family or even those who have not had that issue or heart break but are seeking awareness. Worth every cent
