About this listen
A failed mage learns that just because he's not the chosen one it doesn't mean he can't be a hero in the fifth book of an adventure fantasy series from Sebastien de Castell.
Kellen Argos is an outlaw spellslinger with a bad reputation, a long list of enemies, and zero luck. When he accidently smears blood on the Daroman flag, he's dragged before the queen to be executed for his act of treason.
Face-to-face with the young monarch, Kellen is offered a chance to save himself. If he can defeat the queen at a game of cards, he'll walk free...if not, his life is forfeit. But what begins as a game reveals a conspiracy against the queen's life. And now, Kellen is not only playing for his own freedom, but also for the future of an empire.

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. Story
For the first time as an Orbit special edition, Brent Weeks's blockbuster novella Perfect Shadow tells the origin story of the Night Angel trilogy's most enigmatic character: Durzo Blint. Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He's also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he's worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he's become a hero, his very names passing into legend.

I never believed in the whole “light at the end of the tunnel” folly where people, after having a near-death experience, would startle awake in a cold sweat exclaiming, “I saw the light!” But there I was, in this so-called “tunnel” facing a glaring light, when the last thing I remembered was sleeping in my room - the royal bed-chamber, as others called it. Had I died? If so, how? King Grey once benefited from unrivaled strength, wealth, and prestige in a world governed by martial ability but now finds himself reborn in a society dominated by magic.

Quite intense!
I had to stop the audio book at times due to stressing out because of the dark peril in which the protagonist was caught. Like looking away from a scary scene in a movie, I needed a break. The story is full of twists and turns, and the violence and betrayal keep the listener engaged. It ends on a positive note, but there is still reason to continue the series.
The voice actor is amazing, and I love his characterizations and dramatic interpretation of scenes.

Another great installment to a great series from Sebastien de Castell. Kudos to Joe Jameson for an outstanding performance as the narrator. The only negative thing I can say is that I have to wait quite some time for the next and last book.

Kellen Argos versus Daromen Empire
Having followed Kellen & Reichis this far on their adventures "Queenslayer" did NOT disappoint. De Castell does a wonderful job with an incredibly intricate plot & introducing several new characters into the world. I felt it had a several Greatcoats moments with Daroman queen being an 11 year-old girl & the amount of court intrigue that was going on around her, it all felt very Tristian. There were several moments that had me feeling a little uncomfortable (white binder) while other scenes I wanted Kellen to be the badass he is suppose to be.
Kellen is struggling with who he wants to be through out this book still, is he a hero/villain? He's been on the the run for a couple of years & still seems to be just as naive as he was in the first book "Spellslinger". For a guy that is suppose to be a clever still seems to be led through the story. I also find it slightly annoying that his sister Shalla shows up wherever Kellen is. The ending felt emotionless & left me wondering why.
Overall I would still recommend this series to anyone that asked me & I have already pre-ordered book 6 for the finale of this series.

Another Solid Entry
The Spellslinger series continues. Kellen's story is compelling and addictive, but I feel like the writing has slacked off a good bit. The story seems to struggle to connect plot points at times, and in Queenslayer takes new turns that exclude major characters and plot points. There are times when it kind of feels like a side quest. But, a good side quest nonetheless. Hopefully the plot will get back on track and Kellen will finally rid the world of his annoying family

Difficult
I love these books. I loved the beginning of this book. The last quarter of the book was difficult to read and started giving me intense stress that I really didn’t like. It contained really long scenes describing rape and animal cruelty. I hope the next one isn’t quite so intense.
