About this listen

A man is severely injured in a mysterious accident, receives an outrageous sum in legal compensation, and has no idea what to do with it. Then, one night, an ordinary sight sets off a series of bizarre visions he can’t quite place. How he goes about bringing his visions to life---and what happens afterward---makes for one of the most riveting, complex, and unusual novels in recent memory.

Critic reviews

"McCarthy's evocation of the narrator's absorption in his fantasy world as it cascades out of control is brilliant." ( Publishers Weekly)

Excellent Novel

What about James Langton’s performance did you like?

I thought the reading of this novel was a perfect match for the mundane nuances this book was repeatedly describing and culminating in the unsuspected climax.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The twist in this novel was unexpected and a surprise.

Perfect narrator

It is almost hard for me to say whether the book itself is good, if one were to read it oneself. I assume it is based on how much I enjoyed it, but so much of it was because the narrator was just pitch perfect for this book. Really a fun listen.

There several hours I'll never get back.

What a waste of time. I have tried to get through the whole thing but couldn't, so there is a possibility that I have missed some great wisdom being revealed at the end. My loss. Lol

Disappointed with the story

The plot is set very well, the voice narraration was very well done, and as the story goes on it hypes you for what is to come a lot. However, without giving too much away, I really felt like this book was a massive waste of time. To me it was akin to putting yourself through astronaut school and training, working hard on the PhD, only to find out it was all fake. The author might have done this with intention, but to me it was strikingly very disappointing and would not recommend to anyone.

Stupid, Tedious, and Pointless

Add ridiculous, self-indulgent, and annoying and you've just about got the whole of it. How does a novel like this, A) Get published, and B) Attain an average rating over 3 stars? Sad and flabbergasting. What a piece of shite.

I don't get it

There's probably something interesting going on with the themes of simulation and reality, becoming a servant to an unhinged leader, or being obsessed with things such that you dissociate. But the narrative is lacking in motivation. Like, I just don't care about the main character very much. His friend was the only one I liked, and he leaves the narrative early. Overall, it's a short book. So, if you like odd fiction with unreliable narrators, it may be worth a shot. But I bet most people won't enjoy this.
