Publisher's summary

At last, New York Times best-selling author Alan Dean Foster returns to his acclaimed Humanx universe, where a young human orphan called Flinx seeks to unlock the dangerous secrets of his past - and the uncertain prospects of his future with the aid of the formidable minidrag known as Pip. This is the most mind-bending Pip and Flinx adventure yet - a roller-coaster ride into the unknown, filled with wonder and humor, and a host of deadly adversaries.

Using his enhanced empathic abilities, Flinx finesses his way into a top-secret security installation on Earth. Once there, he bamboozles a sophisticated AI program into releasing classified information about the Meliorare Society, the sect of renegade eugenicists whose experiments with human beings had horrified the civilized universe more than twenty years ago. After all, as one of the few Meliorare experiments to survive, Flinx has a right to know about his past. Especially since his telepathic powers seem to be evolving. The question is, evolving into what? The excruciating headaches afflicting Flinx with increasing frequency make him wonder if he will be alive to find out. . . .

Critic reviews

"Best-seller Foster has created yet another entertaining adventure story in the far-flung reaches of a far-future outer space.... Using the traditional cliff-hangers and narrow escapes of classic SF adventure page-turners, and propelling Flinx from one crisis to another, from moral dilemma to deus-ex-machina, Foster enlists multiple formulas for a surefire . . . experience that should appeal to space-opera fans." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Flinx's trek through the deadly desert and his encounters with the AAnn make for a good read." ( Locus)

one thing ...

the one thing that bugs me about this series is the cover art. why? because the author describes his main character as a red head, but the majority of depictions show someone with near golden blond hair. he's also described to have a darker complexion closer to Indian than European. aside from that it's a good story.

vocabulary

I think somebody gave him a "word a day" desk calendar, just before he started writing this one. It was both amusing and a bit annoying. Lot's of those irritating "journalistic" vocabulary words which are harsh and only impress those with a sixth grade education. It was odd how much of those were contained in this one. I am continuing on to the next in the series and am hopeful that he will (have) return(ed) to his usual level of artificial vocabulary inflation for the rest of these Pip & Flinx books. Fingers crossed. ;-)

I am surprised that I never read any of these when they were published. I remember reading several of his books in my late teens and early twenties. I am glad I did not read these stories then, as I am enjoying them straight through for the first time, now.

Reunion

Mr. Foster is an excellent storyteller. He is able to stretch your mind with new concepts, vocabulary and tell a great tale at the same time. Any time I find a new story authored by him, I'm willing to purchase it, just on the weight of his name. I haven't been disappointed yet.

Great book, great series, great author

Author never fails to keep reader reading. I cannot believe how many times I have reread this series since The Tar-Aiym Krang was first written, oh so many years ago.

Still Hooked on this Series

Reunion doesn't disappoint. It has been many years since I immersed myself in the Flinx & Pip Series and this volume captures and keeps my attention. Can't wait to start the next book.

Pip is no drag.

All Mr. Foster ' s storirs are well written with engaging characters. The main Protagonist, Philip Lynx--a/k/a Flinx, has his weaknesses, but he is resourceful , engaging, snesky-in a world where this is required as a necessary survival trait as he i not an overwhelming physical specimen. Nor is he unattractive.
His side kick, the mini drag Pip, is omnivorous, and venemous with human common sense. Wouldn't you like your favorite pet to be able to protect you and fly?
Flinx has a problem that he must solve.
It is a tough problem.
However, he has. friends.
