About this listen

The Person They Love is Just A Facade

Seventeen-year-old Akane has everything she could ever want: friends, a boyfriend, and an all-round perfect life. No one knows that her every move is a calculated performance, dictated by a compulsive need to be liked. Her flawless act is disrupted when she meets a man named Ai, who looks and sounds exactly like the protagonist of Akane's favorite novel. Can this be a coincidence? And if not, what does it mean?

From Yoru Sumino, bestselling author of I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, comes this ensemble drama of fragile hearts and intersecting fates.

A Fabulous Book with a Terrible Title

I'm not even sure how the title of this book even fits... maybe it's lost in translation. But please ignore the title and give this book a chance. It really is fabulous.

I always find that the best books are character-driven and the best authors can craft a story around the characters while keeping these characters true to themselves throughout the book. This is such a book. At its heart, it revolves around a novel about a girl who compulsively needs to be liked by everyone, and her self-hatred at being trapped in that role with no one ever knowing her "true" self. This book is about a handful of characters that either identify with the main character, are thought of as being like the supporting character that is the antithesis of the main character, or are related to those two in real life in some way.

I could gush about what I like about the book but I'd rather not spoil your enjoyment of it so I suggest that you just give it a try for yourself. It is most definitely one of the best books I've read in a while. It hardly even feels like a light novel and more like a phycological thriller. It was very well done.
