About this listen
Set in rural upstate New York along the Delaware River, the Wayward Son Diner is a pit stop for tourists and locals of Sullivan County. Waitress Alex Hanson has seen it all and has no interest in the daily gossip-mongering of the natives. Knowing full well what it feels like to be the grease on the wheel, Alex takes pity on new park ranger Sam Ruiz, when he’s accosted by several eligible females whose need to satisfy their biological clocks outweighs their ingrained trepidation of a government employee.
Alex’s reluctant intervention starts a chain reaction that forces Ranger Ruiz to her doorstep, pushing the NPS agenda, even though he hates to see Alex so on edge. Despite the spark of attraction, neither Sam nor Alex is willing to explore a real relationship - until a dangerous warning hits Sam too close to home. Before Alex can blink, she’s enmeshed herself in Sam’s investigation, and unwittingly becomes a target for the homegrown terrorists gunning for the National Park Service. And for Sam.

Ryder, Garrett, Kenzo, and Diesel - The Vipers. Their deals are as sordid as their business, and their reputation is enough to bring a grown man to his knees, forcing him to beg for mercy. They are not people you mess with, yet my dad did. The old man ran up a debt with them and then sold me to cover his losses. Yes, sold me. They own me now. I’m theirs in every sense of the word. But I’ve never been meek and compliant.

Beckett: If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have. I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride. My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart.

Story
After watching my mother succumb to a mysterious illness, I promised myself two things. I'd find the cure for what ravaged her and leave the godforsaken city where she abandoned me. Four years later, I received an acceptance letter from Dracadia University, one of the oldest most prestigious schools in the country. Nestled on a secluded island off the coast of Maine, it's rumored to be haunted by the souls of the mental patients exiled there centuries before, those whose bones are said to make up the island's white sandy shores. And restless ghosts aren't even its most daunting peculiarity.

Turned suspenseful
I started listening to this thinking it felt like you were listening to a gentle flowing story that you could listen to in the background while doing the chores, it had an interesting plot line and I was enjoying the easy listening, and then.... one hour before the end it got gripping!! I couldn't stop I had to know the end, my heart was racing a little as the tension built. I must say I was satisfied at the end, I had guessed a few subplots but didn't guess the final bad guy, loved that.
The narrator was very skilled, kept the story going well

A Romance & An Adventure
I enjoyed this standalone story a lot. Ranger Sam Ruiz was working for the NPS and was newly assigned to upstate New York. Alex Hanson worked at a local diner. When dangerous things started happening, Sam turned to Alex for help with the local population. I liked the characters. They were complicated and scarred, but both were realistic. I enjoyed the slow burn to their romance. There was plenty of action. Hollie Jackson's narration was fine, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review which reflected my opinions.

A nice quick listen
In the beginning of the story I honestly didn't know what was going on. I still don't know why the town hated the rangers. Once I got past trying to understand things and just listened to the story It was nice. Alex was a bit damaged but she was a fighter who wanted to try and have a normal life. Sam was not an alpha but a very strong beta. He took charge when needed and could kick ass when necessary. The towns folk were a bunch of busy body gossips and the end hooks still have me scratching my head but at the end of the story i was happy with what I got.

Townies vs rangers
If you could sum up River Rats in three words, what would they be?
rangers, rape, romance
What did you like best about this story?
More to the story than just a romance.
Have you listened to any of Hollie Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No idea. She did a great job with this one. Loved the accents.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I probably chuckled a time or two and also teared up now and then.

Good drama and plot. Narrator blech.
This narrator is so bland and disappointing. The story is damaged by her reading.
The story, however, is just right for its length. That is, it doesn’t feel like we were cheated out of more story, nor does it feel as if we wanted it to end 40 minutes before it did.
I enjoyed the amount of drama. There was a bit of rushing in one or two parts, but that may just reflect my preference and not something everyone would agree on. The kids’ parts were given a fair percentage of the book, and were well written, not unrealistic or just as props.
