About this listen

Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes turn the Riviera upside-down to crack their most captivating case yet in the New York Times best-selling series that Lee Child called "the most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today."

It's summertime on the Riviera, where the Jazz Age is busily reinventing the holiday delights of warm days on golden sand and cool nights on terraces and dance floors. Just up the coast lies a more traditional pleasure ground: Monte Carlo, where fortunes are won, lost, stolen, and hidden away.

So when Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes happen across the Côte d'Azur in this summer of 1925, they find themselves pulled between the young and the old, hot sun and cool jazz, new friendships and old loyalties, childlike pleasures and very grownup sins....

Riveting,from first page to last

Laurie R king has done it yet again, if any series of books deserves to be a PBS mystery mini series this one does! From the first novel to this last, I have been captured by Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes. Long a fan of Sherlock Holmes mysteries this is a fresh and wonderful take on the life of Sherlock Holmes.

Mary Russell’s adventures never cease to hold me captivated and surprised. I only wish that One did not need to wait so long in anticipation for the next novel. But wait I will, with great anticipation knowing that each of Mary‘s adventures will be as good if not better than the last.

Mrs. Hudson... the rest of the story?

This was an enjoyable and necessary follow up on Mrs. Hudson's storyline. One is left thinking there is yet more to tell about this Clarissa of many talents. I can't wait until the next story, which promises to have something to do with vampires. I do wish for more interaction and conversation between Mary and Holmes; those are the "cream in the coffee" (or tea, in their case).

As always, Jenny Sterling’s wonderful characters of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes do not disappoint.

Superb writing and historically fascinating

Absolutely adore Mary Russell and her developing character. Laurie King has got to be one of the greatest authors of all time!

Always wonderful

A slow start, but the relationship between Mary Russell and Holmes still carries a spark of brightness few authors in this Sherlock Holmes redo genre can even venture to approach as well.

OK, but not up to expectations or past books.

I've read every Laurie King books in order since Beekeepers Apprentice, and love the series. Yet, I found Riviera to be disappointing, though I still enjoyed much of it. The first third of the book, however, almost lost me, as I found myself rather bored. (At least half of it could've been cut without loss to the later story.) But I pushed on & the story did improve. It was interesting to learn more about [LK's version of] Mrs. Hudson and the adventure that followed. Anyway, I still look forward to the next book.

Not enough Holmes

I didn’t enjoy this as much as other Russell/Holmes stories. One if the best parts of these stories for me is the interplay in the relationship between the two. This story is mostly Mary. I also didn’t like the American accents in the performance. And parts of it had tedious detail.

Quite a change in one character

Although this was a great read, as are All Lauri Kings books, I had some difficulty accepting the great change in One beloved character. The change was just to drastic for me to accept. As I read my "old knowledge had a way of interfering with the new. If this was a new character I would not have had a problem just sitting back and enjoying the story.

Highly Recommend this series

This time the mysteries are in Monaco. Again, Mary Russel throws herself into potentially dangerous events to figure out who is doing what. But, the lines are blurred, making it even more difficult for her to decide what to do. Very entertaining!
