About this listen

Gnawing worms, unquenchable fire, utter darkness, weeping and gnashing of teeth. With these fearful words, Jesus warned that hell is real...and that we could end up there.

Since the Early Church, Catholic saints and other visionaries have reported horrific scenes of eternal punishment. Dozens of saints throughout history have described the terrors of hell and relayed horror of being separated from God for eternity so that we may see for ourselves and repent.

In Saints Who Saw Hell, you’ll find:

  • The scriptural witness to the reality of hell, including the warnings of Jesus, the prophets, and the Apostles
  • Scenes from the second-century Apocalypse of Peter, the oldest surviving Christian vision of hell
  • Ancient reports collected by Pope St. Gregory the Great
  • Medieval accounts from St. Bede, the voyage of St. Brendan, St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Catherine of Siena, and St. Frances of Rome
  • Witnesses to hell from the time of the Catholic Reformation, such as St. Teresa of Ávila, Blessed Maria de Agreda, and Blessed Richard of St. Anne
  • Visions from later centuries, such as those of St. Veronica Giuliani, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, St. John Bosco, the children of Fatima, and St. Faustina Kowalska
  • And other accounts from those who insist they have witnessed the fate of the damned

The scenes in this audiobook, varying in detail and source, all testify to one harrowing truth: Hell is the final guarantee that what we do really matters.

For us here on earth, a peek at the grisly tortures of hell is sometimes what we really need to redouble our efforts at achieving the glorious sweetness of heaven.

Book is a pure gift - crucial info!

Please re-record with different narration- narrator is over the top expressive. I feel an even, somber tone would have been the way to go. Narrator distracted me from the text- I had to work hard to listen for just the words/message.

O’Brien goes overboard

The narrator seems to be giving a stage performance. It is too much for me. Just read the book man.

Otherwise a good book. Thigpen is solid.

A good supplement to the book Hell

This book contains more detailed information on hell and a good supplement to the book Hell by Fr Scroupe.

All modes and methods of a vengeful God

While the narrator attempts to make it a more theatrical presentation, one actually starts to numb out over time as this collection of hellfire, torture, wrongdoings throughout the ages, leaves one with the feeling that no matter what you do you are going to end up in hell. From little children ending up there to aborted babies condemning their parents, to holy people who did most things right but were not charitable to widows and orphans, it’s a good survey of what saints and holy folk have envisioned or been shown…but I didn’t learn how I’d ever avoid eternal damnation. The tone makes it seem that Mother Theresa and Pope John Paul could t have made it out. I am not claiming that hell doesn’t exist, or that soul do not go there. I am saying there is no balance here or many guides towards grace other than “Repent Repent Repent”…from everything.

Amazing

Dr Thigpen is a fantastic author & I am grateful for his efforts in gathering all these works, the writings of the Saints, together. This book is great inspiration to avoid sin & vice, to assist others in reforming their lives, & to seek God in everything I do.

Great text ruined by melodramatic narration

I’m going to buy a paper copy of this excellent collection of texts of the Saints who saw hell. The dramatization of this production is off putting at best. The voice characterizations defeat a great deal of the messages left to us by the Sainted Authors in this book. Please, someone consider recording a more appropriate reading of this audiobook and I will be happy to purchase a copy. Thank you

Wonderful

Excellent book about a miserable, but necessary subject.

Kevin O' Brien is the perfect narrator. I don't know how in the world he portrays the damnable characters in the stories so well, but I suspect he should be put in jail for doing it so... perfectly. Hats off to his fantistic performances performance.

The alternate characterizions

I liked the way each character was portrayed using a different voice and mood.
