Publisher's summary

From the OR to the ICU, Dr. David Alfery brings you into a hidden world of medicine that has never before been seen. You will witness the exhilaration a physician feels when a life is miraculously saved, the terror when a life is on the line, the shock of an unexpected demise, the grace patients evidence when facing the end of life, the anguish one suffers when a family member is perilously close to dying, and much more.

Saving Grace illuminates what really goes on in the life and death struggles in acute care medical settings. As a result, you will view your own doctor in a new light. Saving Grace will broaden your perspective on death, and it will bring into focus the fact that, at some point, we all will die. More importantly, it will forever change the way you live.

SAVING GRACE BY DAVID D ALFERY, MD

Dr. Alfery has written a book documenting his career as a physician who spent most of his time as a Cardiovascular Anesthesiologist. The author describes patients he has cared for. Most patients lived, some died, but their situations are described in eloquent prose. While everyone can read the book, it should be mandatory for healthcare workers and students. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. He has a beautiful delivery. Dr. Alfery calls for the respect of all patients, regardless of background, and helps himself and, thus, the reader deal with the death of several patients.

Dr. Alfery attempts to define the medical terminology he uses in the book. With no healthcare experience, the reader may miss some nuances of his presentation. This is a serious and factual book. There is no “House of God” or “MASH” moment. It is, however, a tribute to the healthcare workers fighting for the lives of their patients.

Straight from the heart

Dr. Alfery’s wonderful narrative of a world often cloaked in mystery to so many reveals the depth of humanity experienced by so many in the health care fields as they navigate the precarious edges of life and death. Being able to hear his heartfelt words in his own voice emphasizes the range of emotions experienced in his long career. I was riveted by his style and ability to illuminate the often mysterious world of anesthesia care.

Best book I have read about a practicing physician

I am a lawyer and my work touches on different aspects of our health care system. I have read many books by physicians and surgeons. Hands down, Saving Grace is the best I have read. The author is also the narrator. His voice matches his words and shows how he is caring, concerned, and committed to each of his patients regardless of wealth, status, or background. I learned a great deal from this gem about the practice of anesthesiology but more important, this book opened my eyes to living and dying. The stories and patient relationships he describes often made me a bit misty eyed. it is reassuring to know that there are Dr. Alfery’s out there who committed to doing what is right.

Thank you.

Beautiful piece of work

Saving grace by David Alfery is a beautiful piece of work that every physician can relate to. The description and the references he used are very real that brings back old memories making it hard to hold back tears. The author painted the scene of his encounters with patients and the lessons he gained from them. I highly recommend this book for everybody to read. It’s a master piece.

What a story of life and death

This is a wonderful book that makes one cry, tear up, smile and thank God for the day.

My wife is an RN and each time she brings home a story of the good bad and ugly. I know she is sharing something I can not relate to.
No more than she could feel my soul when I speak of my time in Nam.

But this book gives you a new look into death and healing. We look at doctors as rich cold hearted people that just give you the facts. No heart just facts.

But being around many doctors and nurses I see the vail they hide behind to the family and the sick person.

This book will remain in my mind for A very long time, as it should
Thank you Doctor for sharing your life in every way that you could

None get out alive, but we can be kinder and more caring how we look at each other as we deal with how divided out country is now.

We never know when god will call you at any age.

Thank you again for the wonderful story

Story of an empathetic doctor

This book was written and narrated by a physician. The narration was excellent. The story of his training and growth was compelling. Anyone that thinks doctors don’t care or just want to make money should listen to this book.
