About this listen

Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett's job has many times put his wife and daughters in harm's way. Now the tables turn as his wife discovers something that puts the Pickett family in a killer's crosshairs in this thrilling new novel in the best-selling series.

A day before the three Pickett girls come home for Thanksgiving, Marybeth Pickett finds an unmarked package at the front door of the library where she works. When she opens the package, she finds a photo album that belonged to an infamous Nazi official. Who left it there? And why did they leave it with her?

She learns that during World War II several Wyoming soldiers were in the group that fought to Hitler's Eagles Nest retreat in the Alps - and one of them took Hitler's personal photo album. Did another take this one and keep it all these years? When she finds the name of a deceased local man who was likely in the unit, Joe visits the man's son - only to find him brutally tortured and murdered. Someone is after the photo album - but why? And when a close neighbor is murdered, Joe and Marybeth face a new question: How will they figure out the book's mystery before someone hurts them...or their girls?

Meanwhile, Nate Romanowski is on the hunt for a younger and more ruthless version of himself - the man who stole Nate's falcons and attacked his wife. Using a network of fellow falconers, Nate tracks the man from one city to another, learning that his target is an agitator and a financier of anarchists. Even as he grasps the true threat his quarry presents, Nate swoops in for the kill - and a stunning final showdown.

Accuracy

Having been in Portland during the riots, the accuracy is closer than one review states. The mayor having the police stand down was real. The violence was real. the boarding up of banks and businesses in the area was real. As this is a fictional story in relation to events and conditions in Portland, it resembled the Portland atmosphere close enough including the actions of the mayor and governor.

Watching the riots while living in Portland also provided a view of peaceful protests turn into riots from outside influences, not part of the protest, as was referenced in this book. Antifa & BLM would stir the crowd into a frenzy and instead of walking away, the crowd become ruled by Mob Mentality.

Shadows Reel really reels you in!

CJ box really outdid himself with this one. Mystery intrigue everything you expect from a CJ box book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I recommend it to all my children.

Another action filled Joe Pickett adventure

I always enjoy the CJ Box series of books about Joe Pickett. I especially like the narrator for these books. This one had three mysteries all happening at once and connected. I enjoyed it.

It’s Mary Beth’s Time to Shine:Interesting Premise

C. J. Box had a lot to say about social and government issues in this book. It seemed that he tired of the story 9/10ths of the way through, but it still was interesting. Davis Chandler’s narration was superb as usual.

Five star, except…

This was a good book. I’m used to saying GREAT BOOK about CJ Box’s work. The performance was, typically, great from Mr Chandler. The story, as a sequel to the Joe Picket #21 Dark Sky, was positioned to be great. 80% met my high expectations. The continuation of the Nate Romanowski part of the story, fell short IMHO. The Meredith Pickett component was great until the library scene when the zero brain bad guys easily made it through local police who were EXPECTING the armed & dangerous killers, because they had set the trap; with the library bookcases dominoing into Joe…well, you get the picture.
