About this listen

Patients with eating disorders frequently feel that they aren't "sick enough" to merit treatment, despite medical problems that are both measurable and unmeasurable. They may struggle to accept rest, nutrition, and a team to help them move towards recovery. Sick Enough offers patients, their families, and clinicians a comprehensive, accessible review of the medical issues that arise from eating disorders by bringing relatable case presentations and a scientifically sound, engaging style to the topic. Using metaphor and patient-centered language, Dr. Gaudiani aims to improve medical diagnosis and treatment, motivate recovery, and validate the lived experiences of individuals of all body shapes and sizes, while firmly rejecting dieting culture.

Informative

If you are listening to this book I am sure you or someone in your life if struggling with an eating disorder. For that I am sorry and I hope it is going well. This book was really helpful to help me understand how the ED brain works and how it never allows the brain to realize just how sick the person is. I have a child that is in a treatment center and this book helped me have more knowledge in all that was taking place mentally and medically for them. A lot of the time I felt like the author was talking about my child. Truly so grateful for this information!

Best book I've read on this in 10 yrs

Wasn't a fan of the narrator but that didn't stop me from absolutely enjoying the book. i have had an eating disorder for over 20 years, so you can imagine how many books I've read on the subject; this one is in my top five. it was helpful and comforting, and i actually felt understood which is extremely rare.

Important book, popularization could go further

Sick Enough is an eye-opening guide on eating disorders. It has an important message and encouraging tone: even though dieting and concentrating on one's body size is common, it doesn't mean it's necessary or even safe.

The book is packed with medical descriptions on the symptoms, very reasonable reasons and outcomes of eating disorder behaviours. These are brought alive with well-written patient stories. At times, the medical language was hard to follow. I wished for more concrete examples or metaphors for describing nutrient quantities or other numbers and acronyms. However, complicated vocabulary didn't make it impossible to grasp the message. English is my second language and I think the book could reach even wider audience were it written a tad more simply.

I liked the sobering medical descriptions of the illness. This book helps rip away romanticism from mental illnesses. These problems can affect negatively anyone's life in various ways. If you are one of these people, you are always sick enough to seek treatment.
