About this listen

A world-changing secret. Superhero mercenaries. Fake it till you break it.

Gus thought he could relax in paradise and level his powers at his leisure, but nothing's ever easy. No sooner are the shields down than the island is beset with intruders full of...only good intentions. Out of his league in every sense of the word, Gus scrambles to hang on to his only shot at making something out of himself. Losing everything despite all he has worked for seems inevitable.

The original owners of Gus' not-so-secret lair have discovered that the Manor is up for grabs. Only they know the true secret it holds - a secret that can change the fate of supers everywhere. Luckily for him, Gus isn't alone this time. Someone from his pre-super life has appeared to help him out, but the new supervillain can’t be certain where her loyalties ultimately lie.

Does he finally have a partner of his own? Or is he doomed to be the sidekick?

This is really solid

I think this is turning out to be one of my favorite stories. It’s not full litrpg, but it is a great story with rpg elements.

Basically, it’s worth the credit.

One of the best 2nd books in a series I've read

Seriously fun follow up to his last novel. The story only gets better.

I need the next one! Need it!

So yeah, pick this one up.

I enjoyed it more than Book 1

While there is still an open-question as to what reality this Earth belongs in, I enjoyed Carl Stubblefield's decision to put Gus' past hardships in perspective by presenting him with someone who had a much more horrible upbringing than his and still managed to keep it all together. The expansion of father's and brother's relationship also provided a level of grayness between the characters that lends itself to less predictable future plot arcs.

Travis Baldree's dispassionate and yet riveting character performance is always a treat to listen to.

missed the music

this was a great story! I'm really enjoying the growth of Gus! I miss the music and pop culture references book one was chocked full of, but still enjoyed the listen!

Great follow up!

I enjoyed the second entry into this series. I feel the author did a good job increasing the MC power as he grows but there are balances that he must contend with. It makes for some good character growth. We also get some more world building to get a wider sense of all the super power phenomena. I can't wait for next one!

Getting Iffy

The narration made me enjoy the story more than the actual content. There's a theme of introverts and gamers being able to "succeed" in life if they stop spending so much time gaming. The pop culture references aren't as nonstop as in the first book but no less detrimental to the story. Gus feels more like a 16 or 17 year old than 25-ish, especially with his awkward sensorship.

A marked improvement!

This second installment in Gus's fight to survive and keep what is his demonstrates significant improvement over the first book. For those that had a rough time with the info dumps in the first book, there are WAY fewer in this second book! I was uncertain about the author's writing style when I started that first one. By the time I finished Sidekick, I decided it had grown on me and was worth further investment. I admire that the author puts so much thought into the books and the various abilities given the main character. I also admire the fact that he sticks to his moral code whenever possible, even when it's hard. I really like moral characters!

Gus gets a sidekick

After taking control of the island, the shield has fallen. This leaves the island open to attack from the corporation that built the manor.

Gus earned a power in Lair that allows him to strip the powers away from a super with a touch. This does quickly lead to Gus becoming over powered. This is a little frustrating seeing him beat down multiple supers that were trained through the academies. This does get addressed in the story though.

As always, Travis Baldree does an amazing job. I’m really looking forward to book 3!
