About this listen

In the 1870s, buffalo hunters moved onto the High Plains of Texas. The Plains Indians watched hunters slaughter the animals that gave them shelter and clothing, food, and weapons. The battles at and near the ruins of a trading fort, Adobe Walls, became symbolic of the struggles between hunters and the Comanche.

Spurs of Realism Goad this Story Along...

... which i have found is not often case in Western Writing...much given to improbable shoot-em-ups. Also easy to appreciate the no-judgment zone style of Mr. Kelton as there is but the slightest tincture of the almost obligatory “white men are bad, Indians are good“ of today’s virtue signaling authors who delve into the genre. Much to the relief of this reader, there is no heavy-handed moralizing and we are allowed to estimate the characters based upon time, the situation, and the Human foibles common to every race. Again, what a refreshing change of pace from today’s politically correct slant. Mr. Guidall was well placed and did his usual superb job.

What a treat!

I love old Western books and this one doesn't disappoint. Really gives you a feel for how the Buffalo hunting range was, and how the cowboys and Indians dealt with one another. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy Westerns. George Guidall narrating is as good as it gets. You won't be disappointed with listening to this audiobook. Great story and continues into the second book Far Canyon. Enjoy

Vivid and satisfying

My second book by Mr Kelton. Realistic characters you care about and want to know more about. The inevitable clash that the story leads up to- I didnt root for either side because they are both just people trying to live their lives. Both groups make choices that lead to disaster.

The end was emotional and appropriate for the world the author created.

George’s narration is incredible.

Elmer Does It Again

Slaughter was an amazing story. Elmer Kelton takes characters and gives them breath. You get the viewpoint from different cultures and are rooting for just about every character in their triumphs, tragedies, happiness and sadness. Kelton breaks the mold of the "good guy vs bad guy" traditional western and instead gives the reader characters that we cannot help but care for. There is no doubt that Elmer Kelton is the best Western Author of all time.

A complex story of a very hard time

This is another of Elmer Kelton’s compelling stories of the harsh realities of the years of western expansion. In this case it is a particularly poignant tale of the last days of the great buffalo herds as seen from multiple perspectives. On the one side there are the hardscrabble hunters desperate to make a killing, both literally and figuratively, On the other, there are the native peoples for whom the loss of the Buffalo will mean starvation and the loss of their way of life. The clash is inevitable. You end up caring about all involved. Well done as always.
