Publisher's summary

When Harland Cain holds a .45 automatic to his head and bears down slowly upon the trigger, he experiences a profound sense of control over his destiny for the first time in his life. He savors the moment and imagines the click of the hammer, the explosion, and the bullet spiraling through the barrel before everything turns black.

It's then he hears the out-of-control screaming of tires on the pavement, followed by the sickening sound of metal crashing against concrete. He lays down the pistol and crosses his yard in that predawn darkness to find a young boy, bloody and dazed, sitting behind the wheel of a demolished pickup truck.

The boy, intoxicated but not hurt badly, spends the night on Cain's sofa. When he explains to the old man that he had intended to kill himself, the lives of the two become inexorably linked with consequences neither could imagine.

Excellent Narrator - Great Character Development

I really enjoyed this book and getting to know and care about the main characters. The narrator was superb and the story kept my interest. It wasn't a total nail biter, world stopper, page turner type book but it was quite sweet. Seemed like a YA book. The writing really gave me the sense of the surroundings it was set in (the desert). When it ended rather abruptly, I was sorry it was over. But glad it gave an explanation of what happened to the characters.

Intense yet so much tenderness

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about a book rooted primarily in male characters. I’m so glad I chose to listen… while staying true to the era, the author weaves such meaningful and tender relationships - Bobby and Dodger’s friendship and the makeshift father-son bond between Dodger and Harley. Nothing about it felt forced and their connections didn’t break more traditional gender norms ans yet there was a window into the depth of connection that is possible between men… even when that’s not what we often see. Beautifully written and artfully performed.

great story great narration

loved this book, all of it. Jackson is a wonderful storyteller and his character development so satisfying. Transported you to the desert, the ranch, the town, the smell and sounds of the setting. Not a sci-fi fan (Jackson's main genre), but huge fan of this author and hope for more novels like Small Moving Parts. Hate to say goodbye to Harley. Dodger and Bobby.

Great Story and Narrator

This was the perfect book for my long car drive and gardening days. It was a little drawn out, but I loved the imagery the author used. Between the author’s words and the narrator’s voice, I felt like I was right there. It’s slow, but there are lots of parts to the whole, and it gives you time to digest them. Loved it!

Powerful story

I fell head over heels in love with Kane. He is the true hero in this book. The wisdom (I imagine he might call it “horse sense” <3) and patience and special brand of fatherly love he bestows on Dodger is a rare find, and something everyone can benefit from. I really didn’t want it to end, but the ending was beautifully written. The narrator could not have been more perfect.

Brought Me to Tears

A magnificent and thought provoking story, brought to life by the incredible narrator.
This would make a fantastic film. Sam Elliott was born to play Harlan Kane.
Loved it!

wonderful, moving story

I loved this book. So different than what I usually listen to but so glad I did. The little twist that brings all the characters to life is so intricate and draws you in. Narration was spot on. I always knew who was talking. Well worth the listen!
