About this listen

When too many patients die under his watch, a troubled young doctor suspects murder. But are his instincts to be trusted?

Returning to practice after a suspension for stealing opioids, a young doctor takes the only job he can find: a post as a physician at the struggling St. Luke's Hospital in east London. Amid the maelstrom of sick patients, overworked staff and underfunded wards, a more insidious secret soon declares itself: too many patients are dying. And a murderer may be lurking in plain sight.

Drawing on his experiences as a physician, Simon Stephenson takes readers into the dark heart of life as a hospitalist to ask the question: Who are the people we gift the power of life and death, and what does it do to them?

As beautifully written and witty as it is propulsive, Sometimes People Die is an unforgettable thriller that will haunt you long after you turn the last page.

Meh

The idea of this book sounds good but it was drawn out. I felt like it became 2 books in 1

Great narrator interesting plot until close to the end

Love listening to the narrator with the Scottish tongue. The story starts of strong and moves forward. Certainly there is some humor but mostly the story is a medical thriller with info on serial medical killers interspersed. It starts to drag towards the end and the end was weak. Like the author ran out of steam and couldn’t come up with a decent plot ending.

An Unusual Book

about an usual subject told in an interesting way. Some reviewers have suggested this book is humorous. I disagree. It is a serious book, a fascinating book because it was well researched and plotted.

Excellent

Excellent story, excellent narrator, excellent book. Don’t be discouraged by the lackluster title. This author is going places

The hospital that took these Dr.s for 2nd chance

I liked the author's subtle humor. It added character and depth to the book! I could relate to the characters because I've worked in the medical field my whole career.

Great book!

Not a traditional thriller, but gripping nonetheless. Well-developed, believably flawed characters, excellent writing, interesting medical tidbits, gripping plot. This author respects his readers' intelligence, which is a breath of fresh air.

Gripping story and great narration!

I didn’t expect to like this book so much, but the intriguing narrator and slow-build storyline hooked me. The performance was superb also. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.

One of the best books I’ve listened to

This book reads like a true story.. like someone is dictating their Memoirs and you’re sitting across from them with your jaw dropping. This intimate sense of engagement makes it all the more remarkable, in addition to the other top-notch aspects of this book. Characters, great story, etc.

It took me into the world of Doctors, Nurses and the Emergency Ward environment, bringing on an empathy I wouldn’t have known otherwise; as I’ve only seen it from a ‘patient’ standpoint.

It’s also scattered with captivating factual tidbits of atrocious human behaviors from medical staff throughout history. More jaw dropping and squinting my face while my husband looks at me from across the room asking if I’m okay…:-)

This was a fascinating mystery that strays from the norm, is staked with relatable human fallibility, and I’m grateful to have come across this book. Very well done!

Fascinating story & wonderful narrator

Great book for mystery and medical thriller lovers. It’s underrated by many reviewers. There are moments of humor, but it’s a serious mystery because it deals with hospitalized patients, suicide, addiction in the medical field, and murder. There are several well drawn characters and a very twisty plot.
