Story
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Story
Celeste Price is an eighth-grade English teacher in suburban Tampa. But Celeste's devotion lies elsewhere. She has a singular sexual obsession: 14-year-old boys. In slaking her sexual thirst, Celeste Price is remorseless and deviously free of hesitation, a monstress driven by pure motivation. She deceives everyone, and cares nothing for anyone or anything but her own pleasure. With crackling, rampantly unadulterated prose, Tampa is a grand, uncompromising, seriocomic examination of want and a scorching literary debut.

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

Before long, she found herself a single mother, scraping by as a housekeeper to make ends meet. Maid is an emotionally raw, masterful account of Stephanie's years spent in service to upper-middle-class America as a "nameless ghost" who quietly shared in her clients' triumphs, tragedies, and deepest secrets.

Disturbing…
…but, sadly, a story that is too often true. The ending was SO sad. The narrator mispronounced words (it’s eSpecially NOT eKspecially) and needs more practice narrating in a fluid way. Words were noticeably skipped. She often paused in the middle of a sentence.

Decent book ruined by narrators
I really wanted to listen to this but the narrator’s inability to properly use punctuation and her fake syrupy voice ruined it. A different narrator would totally change the experience.

The narrator is awful. There are sounds while she’s reading. Her inflection’s are terrible and you can tell where it is spliced. Great book, but the worst narration I’ve heard.

Don’t waste your credit, (read this one) the narrator needs to find a different job! I’ve been an audible listener since the very beginning. This one was the worst, never got used to her, The book would’ve been much better with a different narrator.

Really disliked this book
I never write reviews but I really disliked this book. My first turn off was the narrator. Her voice was too cheery. Her inflection and articulation were "jumpy". Once I got past that, the story was just so depressing. Extreme child abuse and explicit sexual content. I had to finally abandon the read when the explicit sex was incestuous. I am not a prude but this was just too much. I know these situations are true to life but not something I find enjoyable to listen to. I don't shy away from hard topics (have read plenty of WW2 fiction) but this just seemed like abuse and incest for the shock value.

Hate the narrator. Not sure if she’s destroying the book or if the book is as disturbing as it seems. A one rating is too good. Wasted a credit on this.
