An engaging, sympathetic overview

This book is just the right length for a first biography of Spurgeon, covering the things that made him exceptional and setting him in his context. It is well written and the performance is clear and supports the text.

I was hoping for more

I find Spurgeon's writings so very instructive, illuminating, and inspirational. I was hoping this book would have been the same. The author probably did what he set out to do, a scholarly but popularly written updated biography of Spurgeon. Though he often quoted Spurgeon's own letters and writings, I didn't come away feeling that I had come to know the heart of the man. I now have a good framework for the historical timeline of his life, including major events and accomplishments, but I probably could have gotten that from Wikipedia. It probably isn't fair to expect that any writer could have captured Spurgeon's heart - only reading Spurgeon's words can do that.
