Publisher's summary

Vampires, were-coyotes, and the Wild West.

Trouble’s brewing again as Pete’s hunt for another vampire brings him face-to-face with a rival who hates his guts.

Donna, who knows a little too much and takes a little too much pleasure in Pete’s pain, seems one step ahead, and Pete’s dying to know why.

When she proposes that he go back into custody of the same gang that nearly killed him once before, he thinks she’s plum crazy.

He might be right.

But what if her wild plan is the only way to stop them for good?

Can he trust someone who clearly wants to watch him suffer?

A great sequel

Really enjoyed the first installment and I must say the 2nd didn’t disappoint. Familiar characters return with the introduction of new hunters and their sidekicks. Our MC still struggles with maintaining his humanity and it is that struggle which makes him even more relatable. The underground hasn’t given up after he shut their branch down. They’ve got plans for him and for the pack and none of
It is good. And one must always remember, there are consequences for trust at any level. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

Unique and refreshingly different!

Pete McDowell, former Sheriff and un-blooded vampire turned vampire hunter falls in with Donna, who has a brilliant plan to finally solve the issue that Pete”s been wrestling with, or does she? Well written, well narrated and engrossing, Stake in the Game led me on quite the journey. Jammed to the brim with twists, turns, betrayals, and deceptions, this story really kept me interested and engaged. Through it all, I was sure I was headed in the right direction, certain I had it figured out! It’s a good thing my next meal did not depend on my being right! I’d starve! The plot was wonderful, clearly drawn and fully explained. New, well developed characters were introduced and some familiar ones from Silver Bullet (book one) were on hand to provide continuity. This series is so different from anything I’ve listened to before and I am loving it! Five stars!

another great story

the only recurring characters are the MC and his cyote flame.
but that doesn't detract from the story in the least.
again we have a isolated story that builds on the world even further and which keeps me even more interested.
Great job J.M. I look forward to more :)

C.J. is the perfect man for this story and my suspicion of him growing up on a farmstead grows more real in my mind for every word he speaks in this wonderful story

A different kind of Vampire story

Most of the vampire stories I have read have either been back in the Victorian time, or in present time. this one is set in the cowboy time. I found that I liked it! Peter is not your run of the mill vampire, however, he is actually a vampire who hunts other vampires. He is also a part of a werewolf pack and his love interest, Feather, is part of that pack. I didn't read the 1st book, so I'm not sure how that happened, but it definitely did not take away from book 2. I listened to the audiobook version of this book and C.J. McAllister has definitely got the voice for it! His gruff voice is perfect for this character. He tells a great story!
I hope to listen to the next in the series.
