About this listen

New York Times best seller

'Tis the season for romance, second chances, and Christmas cheer with this new novel from Debbie Macomber.

Carrie Slayton, a big-city society-page columnist, longs to write more serious news stories. So her editor hands her a challenge: She can cover any topic she wants, but only if she first scores the paper an interview with Finn Dalton, the notoriously reclusive author.

Living in the remote Alaskan wilderness, Finn has written a mega-best-selling memoir about surviving in the wild. But he stubbornly declines to speak to anyone in the press, and no one even knows exactly where he lives.

Digging deep into Finn's past, Carrie develops a theory on his whereabouts. It is the holidays, but her career is at stake, so she forsakes her family celebrations and flies out to snowy Alaska. When she finally finds Finn, she discovers a man both more charismatic and more stubborn than she even expected. And soon she is torn between pursuing the story of a lifetime and following her heart.

Filled with all the comforts and joys of Christmastime, Starry Night is a delightful novel of finding happiness in the most surprising places.

Praise for Starry Night:

“Contemporary romance queen Macomber (Rose Harbor in Bloom) hits the sweet spot with this tender tale of impractical love.... A delicious Christmas miracle well worth waiting for.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“[A] holiday confection...as much a part of the season for some readers as cookies and candy canes.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“A sweet contemporary Christmas romance...[that] the best-selling author’s many fans will enjoy.” (Library Journal)

“Macomber can be depended on for an excellent story.... Readers will remain firmly planted in the beginnings of a beautiful love story between two of the most unlikely characters.” (RT Book Reviews)

“Macomber, the prolific and beloved author of countless bestsellers, has penned a romantic story that will pull at your heartstrings with its holiday theme and emphasis on love and finding that special someone.” (Bookreporter)

“Magical...Macomber has given us another delightful romantic story to cherish. This one will touch your heart just as much as her other Christmas stories. Don’t miss it!” (Fresh Fiction)

Sweet, Enjoyable Read

What a sweet story. This book definitely does what the author wanted it to do … it leaves the reader with a smile on their face and a good feeling in their heart. It is a simple, well written story. Although you know what is going to happen since the story is predictable, you just enjoy the ride getting there. Debbie Macomber does know how to write a story and she did a good job with this one. I gave this book 4 stars since I only give 5 stars to the best of books; but I would definitely recommend this for a quick, enjoyable read.

Unselfish Love

Totally immersed in love of another and acceptance of their views. Even to a point of losing your source of income. Total faith in the love they have for each other.

Romance but barely Christmas

I've only read Christmas romance books from Debbie Macomber and all of the other ones I've read have been more or less light hearted, I guess you'd call them Christmas romcoms. Not that this one is heavy, just not a comedy.
Don't expect it to put you in the holiday spirit. It has very little to do with Christmas.
It's clean...no cussing or sex...if that matters to you.
All of the other Macomber Christmas books I've listened to seem geared towards older women, even if the characters aren't necessarily older. (And I'm an old man so I'm not judging.) This one seems more open to others. Maybe that is because the narrator seems younger and not overly dramatic.
Anyway, I think worth a credit.

Tired of toxic love interests

This is my first Debbie Macomber book. I picked it up around Christmas time hoping that it will give my the Hallmark/Lifetime Christmas-film feeling.

The pros:
-The book is fast-paced and fairly short, so I was never bored.
- Ms. Macomber is a skilled author that pulls you into her stories and keeps you engaged the whole time.
-The reader does an excellent job of giving each character a unique voice.

The cons (Oh,boy!):
-The ending was rushed and entirely too tidy
-If you are a woman with more modern values, you may internally squelch at some of the lines spoken and the values that this novel endorses. If you are more conservative in your attitudes, particularly about gender roles, this will not be an issue.
-Finally, my biggest issue with this book and some of the other romances and erotic romances I have read, is that it normalizes and romanticizes a toxic relationship. Finn, the love interest, is emotionally manipulative, immature, jealous, disregards the privacy of our protagonist, has little faith in the protagonist after she tirelessly tries to convince him that her love is sincere, and requires that the protagonist makes a sacrifice that would ruin her livelihood and cast a shadow on her professional reputation in order to please him. For her part, our protagonist is a doormat who has little sense of self-worth, and as an odd bonus, she seems to have a pretenatural gift for reading her "mysterious and private" love interest's mind. Seriously, this woman is telepathic. The protagonist's almost supernatural knowledge of the inner workings of Finn's mind is a lazy way for the author to tell instead of show.

Halfway through the book, before the relationship became toxic, I was hoping to dive into Ms. Macomber's other works, but this book was a turn-off.

As with all of Debbie Macomber's books, this was lighthearted and romantic. A very sweet story set at Christmas time. Finished very quickly, easy to understand narrator.

Sweet Book but Very Poor Narration

Where does Starry Night rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'm typically a mystery reader but enjoy diverging to a holiday romance the month before Christmas. While I enjoyed the story, I still prefer a good mystery.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Starry Night?

When Finn showed up in Chicago to visit Carrie.

What three words best describe Rebecca Lowman’s voice?

Gratingly slow narrator. The narrator spoke so slowly, I felt like she was reading to a kindergartner. Her narration definitely detracted from the story. I focused on how much I disliked her rather than the story.

Who was the most memorable character of Starry Night and why?

Carrie, the heroine. She was a good person.

Any additional comments?

It was a good, light story, but I wished I would have read the book instead of listened to it from this narrator.

Loved this book!!

Please write a sequel to this book! We want to know what happens to Kari and Finn!! What a wonderful Christmas story...but what happens in the spring, summer, fall? When and where is the wedding? At the cabin? So many questions left unanswered!!
