About this listen

The middle of nowhere just got a lot more interesting!

Nerdy astronomy geek Marsha, "M" to her few friends, has never been anybody special. Orphaned as an infant and reluctantly raised by an overly-strict "aunt", she's not even sure who she is. M's dream of someday escaping tiny Jewel, Indiana, and making her mark in the world seems impossibly distant until hot new quarterback Rigel inexplicably befriends her. As Rigel turns his back on fawning cheerleaders to spend time with M, strange things start to happen: her acne clears up, her eyesight improves to the point she can ditch her thick glasses, and when they touch, sparks fly - literally! When M digs for a reason, she discovers deep secrets that will change her formerly humdrum life forever...and expose her to perils she never dreamed of.

fantastic narrator

I understand the narrator is the author's daughter so I get why she told the book so well. Many narrator don't put emotion or feeling into their books and just read the script. This particular narrator acted out the action's of the main character and would change her voice well to go along with the narration which I liked.

The story itself is good and I really look forward to seeing books 2-4 on audio.

voice

I loved the books. I could not get past how annoying the readers voice was.

Interestingly different

I am an avid reader of many genres mainly paranormal, mysteries, thrillers, true crime, fiction etc. This book hooked me from the beginning. I liked the story and the characters. The idea that Martians live among humans was interesting and different. The narration was well done. Bethany Barber was easy to listen to. The only thing about the story that bothered me was how frequently " delicious" was used to describe (in reference to) Rigel. Overall it was a fun, clean read/listen. I will continue the series. I believe this book would be suitable for 13+ years and up.

Sweet and squeaky clean!

The audience for this series is teen, but this 55 year old woman really enjoyed this book. The story caught my interest very quickly and maintained it throughout. Even though it is innocent, it is not silly. I never finish a book if I don’t like it, and I looked forward to listening to it every day!

Excellent romance story for teens

Any additional comments?

The author develops the characters well and the dialogues are believable. While the plotline is predictable, there are enough twists to the story to hold the interest of young readers.

Princess Diaries with a Martian Twist

It's not hard to root for the awkward teenaged heroine from the first moment she steps hopefully onto her school bus on the first day of school with dreams of leaving her nerd status behind only to find her blouse buttoned off one button. Orphaned twice with no idea of her true identity, living with a strict aunt who finds fault with everything she does, and being the favorite target of the resident mean girl, it doesn't seem likely things will change for the better anytime soon.

Enter the hot new football star who seems to only have eyes for her, who answers questions she never knew to ask, and suddenly everything from her acne to her social status starts to look up.

I've read and listened to the whole series multiple times, and I'm still always excited for the next book to come out. I enjoy meeting and getting to know all of the inhabitants of both Nuath on Mars and Jewel, Indiana on Earth. As a former high school nerd, myself, this story is what we all dreamed of back when pimples were catastrophic and mean girls held all the power.

Bethany Barber does a great job narrating the story and juggling a rather large cast of characters. Her ability to maintain continuity throughout the series is impressive.

Overall a very good story

I enjoyed the story but I’m not a huge fan of the narrator. Something about her voice is just off putting to me.
