About this listen

NYPD Detective Michael Bennett is about to take on the most sinister challenge of his career. The nation has fallen into mourning after the unexpected death of a beloved former first lady, and the most powerful people in the world gather in New York for her funeral. Then the inconceivable occurs. Billionaires, politicians, and superstars of every kind are suddenly trapped within one man's brilliant and cold-blooded scenario.

Bennett, father of 10, is pulled into the fray. As the danger escalates, he is hit with devastating news: after fighting for many years, his wife has succumbed to a terrible disease. As New York descends into chaos, he has lost the great love of his life, faces raising his heartbroken children alone, and must somehow rescue 34 hostages.

Day after day, Bennett confronts the most ruthless man he has ever dealt with, a man who kills without hesitation and counters everything the NYPD and FBI throw at him with impunity. As the entire world watches, and the tensions build to a searing heat, Bennett has to find a way out or face responsibility for the greatest debacle in history.

Good Listen

I was afraid that the quality of this book might suffer from having a co-author in the writing process, my fears were quite wrong. This book moves quickly and forcefully from start to finish, the characters are well thought out and presented in a clear and contrite fashion. The narration by John Slattery is first rate as one would expect and the 2nd reader does quite well but has a very small part to work with.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Step on a Crack?

The phone conversations that the narrators do together are especially compelling, both in the story and because the nartators play off each other.

Which character – as performed by John Slattery and Reg Rogers – was your favorite?

Michael Bennett, the protagonist, is the reason I listened to this book even though I had already read the book. I chose it because I have loved John Slattery since he was on the TV show Homefront years ago and he brought even more warmth to Michael. Reg Rogers, especially as

Any additional comments?

Michael Bennett with his complex and unusual homelife is a new type of thriller protagonist and a welcome deepening of this genre.

Best of Patterson

Would you listen to Step on a Crack again? Why?

Having read many of James Patterson's novels with solid **** ratings and more than a few ***, I was surprised to find a novel of exceptional quality. The characterization was fantastic and the story enthralling. I don't reread may books; I could't count the number of times I have returned to this title.

What does John Slattery and Reg Rogers bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Another quickie!

Great fast read, but way too short for a "novel." Patterson should release these as a novella."
