About this listen

"If there were a Guinness Book of World Records entry for ‘amount of times having prayed the sinner’s prayer’, I’m pretty sure I’d be a top contender," says pastor and author J. D. Greear. He struggled for many years to gain an assurance of salvation and eventually learned he was not alone. "Lack of assurance" is epidemic among evangelical Christians.

In Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart, J. D. shows that faulty ways of presenting the gospel are a leading source of the confusion. Our presentations may not be heretical, but they are sometimes misleading. The idea of "asking Jesus into your heart" or "giving your life to Jesus" often gives false assurance to those who are not saved - and keeps those who genuinely are saved from fully embracing that reality.

Greear unpacks the doctrine of assurance, showing that salvation is a posture we take to the promise of God in Christ, a posture that begins at a certain point and is maintained for the rest of our lives. He also answers the tough questions about assurance: What exactly is faith? What is repentance? Why are there so many warnings that seem to imply we can lose our salvation?

If you have OCD tendencies

This book along with the Bible give you permission to stop asking Jesus into your heart, (not that there’s anything wrong with doing that) and find relief in trusting in the finished work of Christ. This book along with therapy for serious religious OCD has brought me relief after decades of torment and anxiety. Read it. Take notes. Rest in the finished work of Christ. JD summarized the Gospel as “Jesus in My Place.”

take a little bit at a time and digest.

This book is very detailed and tries to ensure that you clearly understand the meaning in each chapter. I think they best way to get the most is to listen in little chunks and take time to digest and self reflect. I find the ways the chapters are laid out is a great flow.

Finally! A book on assurance that truly delivers

If you've ever read a book about assurance that left you more confused or less assured of your salvation than before you read it, then you may be leary of books that promise to help you understand how you can be assured of your salvation. But this is not one of those books. For the Christian who struggles, this book truly delivers on its promise to help you clearly understand how you can truly know that you have eternal life.

Excellent.

I needed this book. The Lord used JD’s experiences and the truths he expressed to calm doubts that I’ve periodically experienced over the course of my Christian life. I am grateful.

Good doctrine

I liked the use of Scripture to make clear this often misunderstood issue. It's also a compact read.

Absolutely Stunning!

This is one of the best listens I have heard in a very long time. If you struggle with assurance of salvation then you NEED to listen to this ASAP. Do not pass it up. Also the author is reformed calvinist so that makes it much better! To God alone be the glory!

Thought-provoking with some Heart Surgery

As soon as the first two chapters begin, it's like JD was talking directly to me. The whole "Jesus into Heart" mentality with children gets an overhaul and challenges the new Christian to REALLY check their heart. This book is a good shield to have in your armory for affirmation. And it's great to pass along to new Christians with learning disabilities or uncertainty.
