About this listen

Known for her outstanding performances on the groundbreaking television series The Good Wife and ER, Julianna Margulies deftly chronicles her life and her work in this deeply powerful memoir.

Named One of the Best Books of the Year by Good Housekeeping

“At once a tender coming-of-age story and a deeply personal look at a young woman making sense of the world against a chaotic and peripatetic childhood.” (Katie Couric)

As an apple-cheeked bubbly child, Julianna was bestowed with the family nickname “Sunshine Girl”. Shuttled back and forth between her divorced parents, often on different continents, she quickly learned how to be of value to her eccentric mother and her absent father. Raised in fairly unconventional ways in various homes in Paris, England, New York, and New Hampshire, Julianna found that her role among the surrounding turmoil and uncertainty was to comfort those around her, seeking organization among the disorder, making her way in the world as a young adult and eventually an award-winning actress.

Throughout, there were complicated relationships, difficult choices, and overwhelming rejections. But there were also the moments where fate, faith, and talent aligned, leading to the unforgettable roles of a lifetime, both professionally and personally - moments when chaos had finally turned to calm.

Filled with intimate stories and revelatory moments, Sunshine Girl is at once unflinchingly honest and perceptive. It is a riveting self-portrait of a woman whose resilience in the face of turmoil will leave listeners intrigued and inspired.

Critic reviews

“Over the course of her illustrious career on screen, Julianna Margulies has played any number of unforgettable characters but as this memoir proves, she might be most fascinating as herself.... Not every celebrity autobiography has a truly compelling story to tell, but this one does and tells it with style, humor, and flair.” (Town & Country)

“[A] thought-provoking and revelatory memoir.... Though Margulies’s anecdotes may be outside readers’ own realms of experience, she relates them with such intimacy and candor that readers might recognize in her a kindred spirit.... A deeply reflective narrative that will appeal to both Margulies’s fans and anyone who enjoys a warm and well-crafted memoir.” (Library Journal)

“Margulies...shares her path to stardom in this frank memoir.... Readers looking for salacious Hollywood tales won’t find them here; instead Margulies’s fans and all readers interested in TV careers will enjoy learning her origin story.” (Booklist)

Wonderful memoir

I love memoirs and this is one of the best. This story demonstrates that we all go through the same triumphs and lows. We are not alone in this thing called life. Juliana’s delivery and the accents are perfect!

Loved Listening Every Minute! What a Journey!

Julianna is an excellent writer and her voice is a delight for listening! For whatever reason, I didn't see her in ER which I regret. But I always looked forward to and admired her brilliant performances on "The Good Wife". Now knowing that she was juggling motherhood of a small child, marriage and her acting career, I have even more admiration for her professionalism and performances.
Following her unusual journey through the chapters reminds me of my own journey toward "waking up" and finding one's own voice even though our lives don't resemble each other's in the least. Julianna is highly relatable in her journey. Her gratitude and refusal to take anything for granted is inspiring. I loved listening to her book, and am sad that it's finished (at least for this book). Thank you, Julianna for so generously sharing your life with us!

Brilliant, beautiful master storyteller

So glad I purchased the audio version of this book to hear Julianna’s voice tell her own story. She has had so many experiences in life that it really makes me appreciate the characters she plays even more. She is full of wisdom and I love how she approaches situations so thoughtfully. I would love for this book to be followed up with another one that details her adult life since this one largely focuses on her youth.

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow...

Julianna Margulies' memoir was a breath of sunshine. I happen to love the genre of memoir and enjoy the journey most authors have dared to navigate - stepping into the pothole of their emotional past – willing to dive deep to prepare the way for clarity and healing. Memoirs give us hope that our own internal stories are worth excavating. If you are on the path of self-discovery, you can be comforted and reminded that there is no one way to traverse the landscape that haunts you.

Julianna's rich bi-continental/bohemian/European/East Coast childhood upbringing offered her a non-conventional landscape and tapestry from which to see the world and draw her future characters from – and to view her experiences through a kaleidoscope of creative truths – as an eyewitness to each of her parent's questionable coping tactics with long physical and emotional absences.

She and her sisters were hurt by their parent's choices - their insistence to have the emotional space and freedom to explore their need for individual career fulfillment, ignoring emotional boundaries between a parent and a child, trying to navigate personal responsibility while trying to raise a family – resulting in early independence and confusing emotional development. However, as she got older - she appreciated their struggles to remain independent as people – even if child-rearing was not their strength.

Julianna is a stellar actress and narrator and I was sorry she left "The Good Wife" – which I watched religiously until she exited the show. She takes no prisoner's in the outing of her parent's selfish behavior and in the unhealthy long-term personal relationship she had for ten years during the early part of her career. I am thrilled she has found her "happy place" and that she has found the contentment and stability she craved with her future husband Keith and their son, Kieran. Her life does not need "Triage" and a visit to the "ER" is no longer required.

Touching, honest, and real

What a raw and honest peek into the life of a human being. So often, people think they know those they lionize, but really we know only the characters they play. This memoir is the story of a life—a family, a daughter, a wife, a mother. A woman, searching to know who she is. It’s heart-warming, thoughtful, honest yet tender. I appreciate so much the way the is able to expose the stories of her flawed (and very human) parents with tenderness and compassion. It’s a beautiful story about family, forgiveness, and gratitude for all that is real about being human. So lovely. Full of sunshine and warmth blanketing the sadness and hardships of her life.
