About this listen

The outbreak began in New York. Soon it had spread to the rest of the world. People were attacked and infected, and they died. Then they came back. Nowhere is safe from the undead.

As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The press was nationalized. Martial law, curfews, and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned.

Bill Wright broke his leg on the day of the outbreak. Unable to join the evacuation, he watched from his window as the streets filled with refugees, he watched as the streets emptied once more. He watched as they filled up again, this time with the undead.

He is trapped. He is alone. He is running out of food and water. He knows that to reach the safety of the enclaves, he will have to venture out into the wasteland that once was England. On that journey he will ultimately discover the horrific truth about the outbreak, a decades-old conspiracy, and his unwitting part in it.

This is the first volume of his journal.

looove

fantastic story, believable character, everything makes SENSE. I love that his background plays into a lot in how he survives, and not in a military kind of way. I also like his inner turmoil.

Fascinating Perspective From a British View Point

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would highly recommend this audiobook to any friend that enjoys Zombie and Apocalypse stories. It is very different from most of the Zombie books I've heard or read. Starts a little slow but it is very realistically portrayed.

What did you like best about this story?

What i liked the best was the fact that the writer infused common sense when writing this story. Very realistic actions that the character displays. Things that are left out of so many Zombie stories. For example, when the character was having to go through empty apartment units utilizing the attic space, this was very realistic and exactly what a thinking person would do. Breaking through sheetrock, checking boilers (water heaters to us Yanks) for water to drink, and going to the gym to find supplies was ingenious. Doing it all with a broken leg in a cast. Genius! The added fact that the character is injured really makes this story interesting. To see how he deals with such a terrible event while layer up and nearly crippled really brings the story home and makes you feel a lot of sympathy and empathy for the character. If I were a writer, this is the way I would like to tell a story. You begin to feel like this really happened.

What does Tim Bruce bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

At first I thought that because this was a story by and about Brits that the narrator would be Britishly Boring, but he absolutely was not boring and I really enjoyed the way he truly makes you feel like he wrote this journal and lived through these experiences. Even the little nuances are interesting and realistic. This is like listening to a play. Can't wait to listen to the other books in this Series.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

One Broken Man's Trials to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this story very much. Not too much blood and gore and violence, and just a practical and common sense approach this writer took with dealing with this subject, which can sometimes be boring and corny, but not with this writer.

Awesome! I got hooked!

Great narration. Awesome book that totally hooked me. I ended up not listening while driving because I became too absorbed in it. I've now read this entire series and can't wait for more!

not typical zombie book

Any additional comments?

I can't quite make up my mind about this book. As noted by several reviewers, the book takes the form of a journal maintained by the "hero." The book did not blatantly violate the laws of space and time to such a degree that it made it unreadable, which is something that helps make the book acceptable to me. The book also made it past the real test for me which is that I was able to finish the entire book. The main problem for me in this story was the fact that most of the book takes place as the "hero" lies helplessly in his apartments trapped with a broken leg. This got tedious and claustrophobic pretty quickly. Even once the "action" started, the story was still pretty "subdued." However, I did find that I liked that style. There are none of those zillion zombies chasing and surrounding the hero as the hero dashes madly around. As the he laments in his journal, he does not stumble across piles of food, weapons and armoured vehicles. Not once does he get to drive a battle tank over the zombie hordes. For me, this was actually an interesting contrast to many of the stories in this genre. I have not decided if I will read book 2 yet, but if I have any long trips any time soon, it will be on my possibles list.
