About this listen

This short book is a memoir of a cat and her family, set in the 1960's.

Tabby was a real cat, born in 1965 to an animal loving family in a small northwest Ohio town. The family owned at least 14 cats over the years. Three of the most memorable cats were three generations of felines: mother, daughter, and granddaughter. Tabby was the daughter of Shadow, one of the earlier cats.

Tabby was given the honor of writing her story. She remembers the details of her life as if it just happened yesterday. Tabby tells about all of the author's childhood cats: Chester, born with only three legs; Fluffy, who loved to walk on the neighbor's car; and Mitzi, the meanest cat that ever lived. Also included in the book are the tales of some other family pets besides cats: chickens, a guinea pig, a white mouse, a hamster, and a gerbil. This short autobiography includes 14 photos of Tabby and her family and friends.

From the author: My cat loving friends encouraged me to write a book about my felines after I included a few cat tales in my book, Cherished Cats and Childhood Capers. All of the stories in this book are true. Although the memories of my beloved felines have faded a bit with the passage of time, this cat memoir was written to the best of my recollection.

Yes, but be prepared its sad

Not real sure what other book I would compare it to.

Tabby is the only voice we actually hear from.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it was a short read.

Any additional comments?

I was gifted a copy of this book on audible.com, not at all what I was expecting. as a cat lover this book was sad, we lost a precious life and almost every chapter. even the ending was a little sad.

Lovable, Wholesome Cat Tale For The Entire Family!

If you could sum up Tabby Cat Tales in three words, what would they be?

Beautiful Cat Story: Beautiful, as in it is the kind of story that shows us all that pets can enrich our lives across the entire spectrum of our lives, from childhood to adulthood and on to very advanced ages. Pets bring something special to their owners.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the authorial decision to tell the story from the viewpoint, and voice, of the cat. This act of personalization helps the listener (reader) to come closer to the story and enjoy it more fully than if it were told in the voice of the people involved in the story.

What about Pilar Uribe’s performance did you like?

Pilar's performance was incredible. I had expected a Latin American, Spanish accent, since Pilar is a lovely Latin American name. After listening to the sample, I knew that I was wrong about Pilar's vocal range. She gave an enthusiastic performance, using her voice to add emotional content to the words that she was reading. You were able to feel the emotional response to the events in the cat's life. Joy, happiness, pain, lose, bewilderment, doubt, it was all there. A superb performance.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, I wasn't moved to tears. What I did do was experience what it must have been like when the 3 legged cat is facing his death by shotgun at the hands of Grandfather. I had internally rationalised the logic of "putting down" (killing) a 3 legged cat, but the outcome when Grandfather came back made me happy, because it was completely unexpected for me.

Any additional comments?

Yes, I had read the book already, some time before, so I was curious how it would be as an audiobook. I must say that the project was a complete success. Pilar did an outstanding job as narrator. She is an incredible vocal talent, with an ability to create emotion and elicit a response from the listener. I would recommend her to anyone. The written story came alive in my mind as I listened to it, thanks to her enthusiasm throughout the book.

Tabby Tales

Any additional comments?

I have listened and been entertained by the animal stories written by this author.Unfortunately, this one is so sad...it seems just like a laundry list of cats that died terrible deaths in this one family.Becky Corwin-Adams does a splendid job of reading the list.Sadly I fear that yet another Tabby has bit the dust while I typed this...yes it's that sad."I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast or MalarHouse dot com"

Good book for kids

Shows kids what life was like for cats in the 1960s, when they were considered to be disposable.

Dead Cats

What would have made Tabby Cat Tales better?

Fewer dead cats. More compassion over their deaths. More happy stories about Tabby. Better writing.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Julie by Catherine Marshall

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger, sadness, disappointment -- all of the above.

Any additional comments?

I know it was the 60s and things were different, but in less than 30 minutes of audio, I lost track of how many cats perished, most from being hit by cars or simply disappearing. And there was minimal compassion for their deaths. I thought it would be a cute story told fro a cat's point of view, but it was just dreadful and depressing and not well written. If you love cats, stay away.
