About this listen

August Shroeder, a burned-out teacher, has been sober since his 19-year-old son died. Every year he’s spent the summer on the road, but making it to Yellowstone this year means everything. The plan had been to travel there with his son, but now August is making the trip with Philip’s ashes instead. An unexpected twist of fate lands August with two extra passengers for his journey, two half-orphans with nowhere else to go.

What none of them could have known was how transformative both the trip - and the bonds that develop between them- would prove, driving each to create a new destiny together.

Good yarn for a recovering alcholoic

What did you love best about Take Me With You?

Character development was engaging, but sometimes not terribly realistic.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Take Me With You?

Unless a person has hiked in the national parks mentioned in the story, or at least have been there....will they understand just how personally impacting the scenery can be.

Which character – as performed by Jeff Cummings – was your favorite?

I liked the dog. Interesting, how he does not seem to age in the later chapters, however.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

My John Muir Summer

Any additional comments?

I kept thinking that this book was underwritten by Alcoholics Anonymous. Was a little too preachy in the story line. The characters went seven years without further contact...really?This listener was left wondering what the adult character did every summer during those years; it was never really addressed.

The Sweetest Story

Where does Take Me With You rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved this audiobook. The story touched my heart and I just loved Seth and Henry.

What other book might you compare Take Me With You to and why?

It was a clean story, not a lot of unnecessary complications, starts off simple but develops into a full story like A Man Called Ove, Whistling Past the Graveyard and Saving Ceecee Honeycutt. Your left feeling better about people and life at the end of the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It was so heart warming that I just wanted to find out what would happen the characters. I wanted the story to go on and on.

Couldn't stop listening

The story is a simple tale about a guy traveling across the country who kind of gets stuck taking care of a couple kids as he travels. The
book moved quickly because the characters are so interesting and the story is good. I was done and wanting more in a few days.

Loved every chapter of this book!

Great story. Great characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book from start to finish. This story touches so many aspects of life: family, loss and grieving, serendipity, alcoholism, adventure, facing fears and other emotions, embracing life, being present and becoming a stronger, independent, open-minded and empathetic person. Such an all-around great story!!

Story and narrator don't go together

What did you like best about this story?

Excellent story! Very interesting plot and storyline!

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I liked the narrator, but perhaps the story would have been better with a different one.

Narration made it a conflicting read for me

Would you listen to Take Me With You again? Why?

While I really liked the story, I would definitely only READ it via the book or kindle and not as an audiobook.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Definitely Seth. I continually admired his insight and strength, even as a young boy.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I think the narrator did a great job as a whole, but I had to stop listening to the audiobook and ended up just reading the rest on my Kindle because I had just listened to "A Little Life" (by Hanya Yanagihara) last month and the narrator sounds just like the voice for JUDE when he spoke for Henry. If "A Little Life" had been any other book, it probably would have been fine, but it was such a heart wrenching and impactful book, and Jude was such a painfully detailed character of abuse that I couldn't 'see' Henry due to that fact. I found myself dreading any lines where Henry spoke, when I should have been cheering his voice and attempt to communicate. :(

If you could rename Take Me With You, what would you call it?

I think the title fit.

Uplifting Clime

Catherine's description of the boys excitement at seeing the Grandeur of Bryce Canyon , the Grand Canyon was breathtaking. The personalities and development of the boys when treated with respect and kindness was heartwarming.
