Any additional comments?

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

This was a silly, and fun story...I laughed quite a bit...and this had it all! Gangsters, carnies, magic, vampires, werewolves, dancing girls, villains and heroes...all wrapped up in one funny package...it did jump around a bit, so you really gotta pay attention...but overall a fun and very entertaining listen!!!

Supernatural Pulp Fiction and fun

What made the experience of listening to Tales from the Flip-Side: The Adventures of Big Daddy Cool and the Bombshell Kittens the most enjoyable?

Well this book is not the type of story I generally listen to, but I am glad that I took a chance.

It was extremely entertaining. IT was a pulp story but wrapped up in supernatural and sci-fi elements. Chicago gangsters? Nazi vampires? Time travel? CTHULU?!? It got pretty out there in spots but blended the elements into a cool story. It reminded me of an old serial on steroids.

What did you like best about this story?

I really enjoyed the narrative behind each of the characters and how the stories were interwoven together/

What about J. Scott Bennett’s performance did you like?

He gave a great read and really had a lot of enthusiasm. Each character had their own "voice."

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I definitely laughed in some spots. Sometimes it was just plain funny and in a few spots ridiculous, but entertaining all the same. I definitely recommend this listen!

Entertaining

I don’t usually read many books from this genre, but I really enjoyed this one. The narration brought the story to life and held my interest throughout. The story was well thought out, complete and will keep you listening. I will be watching for this author in the future.

Big Daddy Cool is an Awesome Fun Listen

TALES FROM THE FLIP-SIDE was a super fun audiobook. A gem of a science fiction fantasy noir. There's two stories; the Flip-Side and The Phantom's Tale. He wakes up in the future and tells his story backwards. I loved the characters, especially Big Daddy Cool and several of the Bombshell Kittens, who were very entertaining. I liked Lana Lamour the most. And the part where Penny was kidnapped by Diablo. She was the Red Raven and Ghosty Girl was telepathic. The villains were also good; vampires, nazis, and mobsters oh my.

This entire book was awesome and I'd definitely recommend it for something off the beaten path. JOHN PYKA has a wonderful imagination as well as writing style.

J. SCOTT BENNETT does a terrific job reading this book. His vocal skills are off the charts amazing. He's a versatile voice actor whose always entertaining and one of my faves. This was a great collaboration between author and narrator.

Lots of actions but not cohesive.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, it didn't live up to all the hype from other reviewers.

Any additional comments?

I so wanted this book to be good. I am a big fan of epic-urban fantasy-steampunk-noir-alternative historical-fiction. A great book to read if you're into this kind of fiction is Hard Magic by Larry Correia. But this book Tales from the Flip-Side: The Adventures of Big Daddy Cool and the Bombshell Kittens, tried so hard but just fall flat. The way he describe things just didn't do it for me. For instance when he was describing a tough guy he wrote the word "tough" 3 times in 2 sentence.."Pirelli was the toughest tough to walk in Chicago. Tougher 'n me." And again in another paragraph he wrote "The women screamed primal screams of fear, and even the toughest tough guy panicked." Overall if you like fast action and a nonsense story line.. then this book is just that. But if you really want a good epic-urban fantasy-steampunk-noir-alternative historical-fiction I would pick up Hard Magic.

Big Daddy and Bombshell Kittens blow you away

I'm going to let you in on a secret. I got this book because 1) J. Scott Bennett narrated it, and 2) It looked cool as hell. Just the title alone was worth a look, and knowing that Bennett was at the helm I had no choice, I simply could not resist.

This is a pulpy powerhouse that is set in the 1940's. Set twenty years after a martian invasion. Uh huh. Don't worry, we beat them, but their tech was left behind and with a little reverse engineering we started up our own collection of gadgets and powers, so that you end up with Giant Robots, and people who have superpowers. Sound interesting yet? Darn Tootin'!

Enter Johnny Dellarocca, your titular Big Daddy Cool, who has turned from a life of crime to join the entertainment industry. Not adult entertainment, you perv. He's a singer with a penchant forstage magic, and he's good enough that he makes more than a living at it. The Kittens perform with him at his club. But BDC has a secret. He is a . . . .super . . .hero. Good news is he can read minds, bad news? He has to suffer in order to do so, and his kitten harem help him. There a problem? Well, he isn't the go out and just beat up a buncha bad guys with his team kinda guy, he has bigger fish to fry. I won't say what the problem is, but it is a doozy and it makes life interesting for BDC and his super squad. Things really go pear-shaped after an attack on the club, and man does the story really pick up!

Bennett blasts, bounces, and bowls his way through this story, and you can tell he had a ton of fun doing so. He is a favorite narrator of mne, and so I know his rythyms and pacing well enough to know what to expect from him, but you can really tell he relished reading this book. That enthusiasm spills over onto you, the listener; making the story all the more exciting and fun. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
