Publisher's summary

Talk Triggers is the definitive, practical guide on how to use bold operational differentiators to create customer conversations, written by best-selling authors and marketing experts Jay Baer and Daniel Lemin.

Word of mouth is directly responsible for 19 percent of all purchases, and influences as much as 90 percent. Every human on Earth relies on word of mouth to make buying decisions. Yet even today, fewer than one percent of companies have an actual strategy for generating these crucial customer conversations. Talk Triggers provides that strategy in a compelling, relevant, timely audiobook that can be put into practice immediately, by any business.

The key to activating customer chatter is the realization that same is lame. Nobody says "Let me tell you about this perfectly adequate experience I had last night." The strategic, operational differentiator is what gives customers something to tell a story about. Companies (including the 30+ profiled in Talk Triggers) must dare to be different and exceed expectations in one or more palpable ways. That's when word of mouth becomes involuntary: The customers of these businesses simply must tell someone else.

Talk Triggers contains:

  • Proprietary research into why and how customers talk
  • More than 30 detailed case studies of extraordinary results from Doubletree Hotels by Hilton and their warm cookie upon arrival, The Cheesecake Factory and their giant menu, Five Guys Burgers and their extra fries in the bag, Penn & Teller and their nightly meet and greet sessions, and a host of delightful small businesses.
  • The 4-5-6 learning system (the four requirements for a differentiator to be a talk trigger; the five types of talk triggers; and the six-step process for creating talk triggers).
  • Surprises in the text that are (of course) word of mouth propellants.

Consumers are wired to discuss what is different and ignore what is average. Talk Triggers not only dares the listener to differentiate, it includes the precise formula for doing it.

Combining compelling stories, inspirational examples, and practical how-to, Talk Triggers is the first indispensable work about word of mouth. It's an audiobook that will create conversation about the power of conversation.

Great ideas and free tools

As a mental health practitioner with HIPPA compliance regulations it is difficult to find ways to have your clients talk about your service. I loved the idea provided about the oral surgeons office. We are also considering putting a lending library in the lobby allowing clients to take books that we recommend instead of having to buy their own. We will be using a lot of the free tools provided on their website to begin brainstorming new ideas for a B2B marketing.

Loved it live in London AND via audiobook too

I first heard Jay present this content in London at Chris Ducker's event (the Youpreneur Summit which I highly recommend). It was brilliant. I found the illustrations relevant and the research compelling. I bought the audiobook, uncertain how it would compare with the live presentation. I was pleasantly surprised. The depth and breadth of case studies proved entertaining and educational. I immediately started applying the concepts in our business by creating our own Talk Triggers. Thanks Jay and Daniel! I also point many of my clients to the book too.

Can't Wait to Develop a Talk Trigger

I'll be honest, when they started off with the reference to the Cheesecake Factory menu, I thought this book is going to be about gimmicks and that's not what I'm looking for. However they provided a wealth of examples and clearly broke down what makes a great talk trigger and how it's very different from a gimmick. Done right, it delights your consumer and can provide added value. I also love that they point out that providing good service should already be in place before you depend on a talk trigger.

marvelous book

the greatest use of talk triggers was done by Jesus Christ. he performed many miracles to establish who he was. there are many prophecies that are fulfilled throughout the Bible. he had no marketing budget no advertising budget. yet his talk triggers influenced the world throughout the ages. his influence even changed time.

Can’t wait to get started!

Our small, but steadily growing company (Habit Nest) is always looking for ways to be relevant and helpful for our customers and to really keep that ball rolling, I was named Chief Happiness Officer. I am always looking for ways to help, encourage, and support our customers.

I LOVED this book. I’m actually going to purchase the hard copy after listening to it because I need to really dive into some of these principles and ideas. I can’t wait to see where these excellent pointers takes our company.
