Publisher's summary

The first in a new in-depth nonfiction series examining the devastating terrorist attacks that changed the course of history from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jack Carr and Pulitzer Prize finalist James M. Scott, beginning with the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Beirut.

1983: the United States Marine Corps experiences its greatest single-day loss of life since the Battle of Iwo Jima when a truck packed with explosives crashes into their headquarters and barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. This horrifying terrorist attack, which killed 241 servicemen, continues to influence US foreign policy and haunts the Marine Corps to this day.

Now, the full story is revealed as never before by Jack Carr and historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist James M. Scott. Based on comprehensive interviews with survivors, extensive military records, as well as personal letters, diaries, and photographs, this is the authoritative account of the deadly attack.

Excellent book!

I’m a little too young to remember or have been taught about 1983 Lebanon. This book helped me understand it in a deeply meaningful way. It’s the best book I’ve listened to in a while. 10/10

Very informative

Master storytelling about a subject that has faded from many memories. I always enjoy Ray Porters ability to tell a story.

I was so unaware

I lived through these years but was in high school and did not wrap my mind around anything more than just how sad it was that so many Marines were killed.
The true story revealed in this book just overtook my emotions. Anger!, Empathy, Sadness.
I have always admired Jack Carr, that is why I purchased this book.
Sir, this is your best!
Thank you for writing this

Fantastic book

A great non fiction book. It’s amazing how Carr & Scott told the story through the lens of real people’s experiences.

Required reading (for those that rest easy each night without thinking about the why or the how of it)

Perhaps one of the most startling and disturbing books I’ve had the fortune to come across. It lays bare the sacrifice our military makes for the rest of us. Upsetting in a very real way, for me it brought back regrets that can’t be undone. This book accentuates how much we are insulated from the brutality of war here at home and from the very real gift our Servicemen give us each and every day. This type of truth telling has to be crafted into a powerful narrative by the right storytellers. Jack Carr, James Scott and Ray Porter made this real and recent. The story is almost too emotional, devastatingly so. Absorbed in a very short period or time, I still had to periodically stop as if to take a pull of water while racing across the desert, only to pick up again as I knew I had to finish. I’d tell you to read this because for some it will be a must. I hope you, those out there that can feel history in your bones, find you need this book like I did.

A heartbreaking story that must be read!

I found this story hard to listen to but couldn't turn it off. It's heartbreaking. Carr's use of first-hand accounts from the Marines who were there, told through their letters home, is gut-wrenching. You get to know these Marines, learn about their lives, their hopes, their dreams, their fears, All the while knowing that many of them will perish, Sometimes I found myself holding back tears. Other times I found myself screaming in anger at the perpetrators. Or the politicians and generals that put our Marines in harm's way with no means of defending themselves.

It's an incredible account and I highly recommend it. What makes this story even sadder is that 40 years later very little has changed. Lebanon and the entire Middle East remain mired in a toxic brew of hatred, while American men and women continue to sacrifice their lives in the hope that someday all this will stop. Any candidate for public office or any leadership role in government or the military should be required to read this.

I should also note that Ray Porter's performance is spectacular, as always. I'm a huge fan of Ray Porter, having listened to the entire James Reece (Terminal List) series. I've listened to books from dozens of other narrators, and none come close to Porter's talent. When searching for new books and new authors, I usually start by searching for "Read by Ray Porter."

HEAVY read

First, Ray Porter is always fantastic. And Jack Carr, bravo for writing about this. It was a tough read for me as there is so much sadness but so worth the time. I look forward to your next historical book.
