Publisher's summary

Clara Marsh is an undertaker who doesn't believe in God. She spends her solitary life among the dead, preparing their last baths and bidding them farewell with a bouquet from her own garden. Her carefully structured life shifts when she discovers a neglected little girl, Trecie, playing in the funeral parlor, desperate for a friend.

It changes even more when Detective Mike Sullivan starts questioning her again about a body she prepared three years ago, an unidentified girl found murdered in a nearby strip of woods. Unclaimed by family, the community christened her Precious Doe. When Clara and Mike learn Trecie may be involved with the same people who killed Precious Doe, Clara must choose between the steadfast existence of loneliness and the perils of binding one's life to another.

Hypnotic and Thrilling

Where does Tethered rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book ranks in the top 5 of the books I have listened to so far. I was excited to read more from this same author and was sorely disappointed to see this was her only one.

What other book might you compare Tethered to and why?

I would compare this book to The Weight of Blood because of the subject matter.

What about Rebecca Lowman’s performance did you like?

Her voice is hypnotic. I listen to books during rush hour traffic and I cant concentrait on anything else (in a good non-road rage kinda way, not a dangerous oblivious driver kinda way)

Amazing!

I am not sure who is better here, the author or the reader. If you are looking for a high adventure action thriller, this isn't it. I read this in 2 days, I just couldn't put it down. For a new writer, she writes like she has been writing best sellers for years. The reader has such a mesmerizing voice and style that puts you right in her space with her. The last 7 chapters are unbelievable. By themselves they would be insightful, but the way they are read, are just awe inspiring. More Please!

Good book, but the narrator makes this book!!!

Amy MacKinnon did a great job with the book...not your typical main character...kind of dark, but I like that! Looking forward to her next book! Rebecca Lowman is by far my favorite female narrator. She does an excellent job with the characters. Very convincing changes in the voices. She doesn't rush the words, she takes her time and honors the author's words. This one will NOT dissapoint!

Tethered

The book was very interested but startes a little slow. The lady who read to you was the most soothing voice I every heard and she made you feel like you were walking in the main characters shoes. For a new author I think she did a great job. I would like to see how she develops as she writes more books.

Tethered is Complex, Painful, Beautiful.

Tethered is a layered mystery, and these layers continue to unfold to the very end. MacKinnon and Lowman are perfectly paired in this tangled story of loss, grief, beauty, connection. This is not a light beach read, but if you enjoy good writing and mystery/suspense, this is an excellent book.

With gifted storytelling we're drawn into Clara's world. Throughout the book the writer balances pain with love/beauty: the mortician's job with tenderness shown to the grieving; abuse and the care of flora in a private greenhouse; tricotilomania and the specific, sweet meanings of flowers. These, and more, all exist in Clara's world and we must make sense of it all.
I love the flawed but endearing characters created here, and appreciated being able to learn a few new things as I listened. This is one of my all-time favorites.
Tethered has been reissued as The Unforgotten in print.

Great listen

Where does Tethered rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really liked this book. I'm a big fan of Gillian Flynn and this book reminded me of something she could've written. The writing was very good also.

What other book might you compare Tethered to and why?

The One I Left Behind - because of the who done it aspect and damaged main characters.

Which scene was your favorite?

Really don't have a particular one. The whole book was good.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could've yes.

Tethered to this horrible narration

3 stars for the book, Tethered by Amy MacKinnon, and 2 stars for the narration by Rebecca Lowman who I normally really enjoy. But this reading her narration of the main character, Clara, was literally so melancholy I sped the reading speed up to 1.6 to try and push my way through but it was still awful. Granted, Clara has had a horrible life and now works with dead people as an undertaker and sees little ghost girls in the funeral parlor, but my God, I could barely stand the woeful tones of Rebecca Lowman's narration for 9 hours!!! The book had a very enticing premise and I was really intent on making it through to the end in spite of the depressing narration, but even the story fell a bit flat for me. What I enjoyed the most was the ghost girl and the mystery of who she was and why she was there. What I didn't like was the morose main character who seemed determined to be as miserable as possible in spite of some opportunities for happiness. I would still recommend the book with the above misgivings if you are into the supernatural/mystery/suspense genre.
