About this listen

In an enthralling new historical novel from national best-selling author Kate Quinn, two women - a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947 - are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.

It's 1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She's also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie's parents banish her to Europe to have her "little problem" taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.

It's 1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she's recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she's trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the "Queen of Spies", who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy's nose.

Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn't heard in decades and launches them both on a mission to find the truth...no matter where it leads.

We are standing on the shoulders of giants...

I would give this book 10 stars. The performance is EXTRAORDINARY, EXCELLENT and just wow. This book is well written, the characters are so real, you feel everything and it is full of interesting historical tidbits from World War I and World War II, but most of all it has excellent character development and you will not want to put this book down. I can only recommend this book. The women are so brave, determined and yet so down to earth. What a story. Get the book!

Great read

This is one of those books that engaged me right out of the gate.
Narration had nice accents that didn't distract from the dialogue.

Spys , Suspense , & Romance

A well woven tale of World War 1 & World War 2 that form a circle around the same spy . This novel is read & written so well , I swear I could hear the bones of Eve's hand breaking ! Thanks for a delightful yet sobering novel Ms Kate Quinn ! I want more of yours !

Again please

This is not a good book it is a great book. The authors gift of building female characters with strength, intelligence & independence was inspirational. This spy novel of WW1 & WW2 is very well done, wish there was a part two. The narration also made the book. I have over 700 books in my library and listen to at least one a week, this one I will listen to again and it is definitely in my top ten. BTW because this book was such a pleasure to listen to I downloaded The Rose and the Lion by same author. It was not a bad listen but was not even close to this book.

the whole book. Will recommend to others for sure!!! 👍🏼👍🏼A Stand Out Book

Historical fiction, with excellent character development! Story kept me glued and up all night. Audio is long, over 15 hours, but time well spent. Loved the strong women, and their determination to get to the truth. Enjoyed the back and forth of chapters, and the alternating between Eve and Charlie. Easy to keep track of time and place. Fantastic performance! Hard to believe that one person narrated

Solid five stars!

This is the most outstanding historical novel I've listened to lately. The author uses one of my favorite devices: setting fictional characters against an historical backdrop, interweaving them with actual people. In this case, she spins not only an engrossing tale of love (romantic and otherwise), loss, and revenge, but also acquaints the reader with the little-known, real-life "Queen of Spies," inserting her characters deftly into history. The story moves back and forth in time between WWI and post-WWII, with increasing suspense as the events of both eras collide in a most satisfying conclusion. I recommend this very highly to any fan of early 20th-century history. I absolutely could not put it down!

Captivating!

I could not stop listening. The characters and writing were so vivid I felt like I was there. I absolutely loved the two stories that came together! A must read.

Alice network-eh

The overall story was a good one. Interesting plot, good with twists and turns. I felt the story and character of Eve was very well done, but I found Charley St Clair very annoying. I do believe that college women in the 40s were probably sexually active, but her crude language and her first ploy for Finn seemed out of place-anachronistic. She may have messed around in her grief, and maybe she would talk about it with the lines of Eve and Finn, but I find it hard to believe that she would have spoken in such a crude manner about herself and her activities. That early piece soured me to her. I don’t think the author developed Charley’s character with the same finesse as she did Eve. Finn was fairly well drawn.

The audio narrator was excellent-great job with accents.
