The settings and depth of knowledge of times and geography

Loved it from tip to tail! How someone puts together a story with such details is beyond me!

would have been 5 star but

the whole first half of the book had ben and ned as harbingers of death and bad luck. They ultimately helped no one (as was supposed to be their involvement in anything they do) and in doing so lost the plot set up in the first book. the author then set up a chance at redemption in the ending and, in my opinion, bungled it. The second half was the 3 star.
