Publisher's summary

Among the important problems with the advancement of language is dependability. Suppose a primate makes a noise as a signal. How can other primates count on this signal and trust it? How do they understand it is not faked? As the statement is, "words are low-cost". Primates don't stick to any sense of morality, so if they can phony a signal for their own benefit, they will. This is why we developed mentally expressive signals that are difficult to fake.

The very best defense versus deception by a phony verbal signal is to ignore all verbal signals completely. Sadly this obstructs any development towards establishing a verbal language. How did human beings end up with a language? In other words, language and rituals co-evolved together.

People could now use body language along with spoken signals to communicate with each other. In addition, this was also the very first time they might state something verbally and something else non-verbally. To neutralize the devastating impact of lies on group cohesion, human beings developed routines and religion. Those who believed in the religion were, by definition, more trustable, and as a result, a group of Homo sapiens who believed in religious beliefs might preserve their cohesion more highly than other groups, therefore, could complete much better for resources to get power and eventually to expand and reproduce. This likewise resulted in the advancement of numerous superstitions. Those who thought in the very same superstitions were most likely to be part of the same group and belief system.

Excellent Guide!

All of Joe Navarro's audio books are EXCELLENT and this is no exception. I've been keeping my eye out for it and I'm so excited it's finally out! The audio book is broken down by body part.

Very helpful

I listen this book in a few days. Even though I have a business degree, I found his describing style and content fascinating. My kids also listen this book because I thought it would benefit them and the author learned his skills as a kid. Great book!

I like it

Incredible audio books by this listen. Bought as a present for LEO spouse. He has perused the majority of Joe's audio books and he has never been one to simply sit and peruse audio books.

Great science based book!

I really enjoyed this book. It was filled with great insight on how the body responds to our outside environment and innermost feelings. It was very insightful the way the author gave physiological reasoning behind human behavior. Highly recommended.

Fantastic

This book was so easy to listen. I devoured it. I started recognizing things I was doing unintentionally immediately. You can get maybe 50% of the useful information merely by looking at the pictures/listening the short summaries of those cues below the pictures and reading the interesting little examples in boxes if you are really lazy and want something to peruse while waiting on the bus or something. To get the full effect, just listen the whole thing. So easy to listen. Highly recommend for anyone. May lead to introspective thoughts about past interactions and how to do better in those situations in the future.
