Publisher's summary

Expanding on his first book The Journey of the Heroic Parent, Reedy talks about how all our relationships are connected to the relationship we have with ourselves. He shows how the foundation for intimacy with partners, our ability to parent effectively, and the meaningfulness of our lives can be tied to how well we have unraveled our unique childhood history.

The Audacity to Be You: Learning to Love Your Horrible, Rotten, Self is a simple but bold exploration into what makes us human and why happiness and connection are elusive for so many. Reedy's work is counterintuitive, but the listener will often have the experience of being found and understood as they make their way through his work.

Many people say that reading/listening to Brad's work is like you are hearing something for the first time that you already knew but just didn't have the words for it. Dr. Reedy is a renowned author, therapist, podcaster, and public speaker, and his approach is accessible and nonthreatening. He is a prolific keynote speaker, TV and radio guest, and he travels the world presenting to audiences and training therapists. Through stories gathered from decades as a therapist, cofounder, and clinical director of Evoke Therapy Programs, Reedy gives the listener an intimate picture of mental health and healing.

The Audacity to Be You explains how our personalities are built, brick by brick. From what it means to be oneself, we learn how to authentically love others. Listeners will learn the essence of mental health, and with that understanding, the stigma of mental illness evaporates. Reedy debunks toxic myths so common in our culture, including “You are only as happy as your least happy child,” and how good therapy goes beyond problem-solving. Reedy teaches, “In this way of thinking, you don't get to be right anymore. But you get to be a "self". And that is so much better. That is "the audacity to be you".

Life-Changing book that all can benefit from

This book will help you discover and be ok with who you are and will therefore benefit your relationship with self and others. This book will be repeated regularly to help me continue on this path of self-discovery and making peace with who I am, where I came from, and where I want to go. Many thanks to Dr. Reedy for sharing such powerful and life-changing insights.

Same Lessons, New Teachings

This book touched on topics I’ve learned about my whole life, but the teachings, stories, and psychologically based principles have helped me to digest them in new and tangible ways. I’ve never left more book marks. Thank you.

How to be a better human

I just finished this book and plan to start it again right now. So much wisdom in these pages. We are all deeply flawed individuals doing the best we can based on the way we were raised by other deeply flawed people. Challenging what we believe to be true about everything is painful and uncomfortable, but so worthwhile.

Way more than a self help book

This book puts the bread and butter of what it means to be a mature human in relation to others right in front of you. It’s going to take lots more re listening and digesting this book for these deeper transformations in self and other perception to take hold. It’s already transformed many of my relationships. I’m still looking forward to putting much more of it to practice.

The best!

This is the best self help book ever created! It should be sort of a Bible…read by everyone! I finally found what I was looking for and the answer to so many questions.

Incomplete yet Wonderfully Helpful

I enjoyed this book immensely because of the wonderful device found in here.

I do think that the author seemingly wanted to overcome some of his cultural over bringing and that this agenda forms a red thread throughout his teaching.

Mr. Reedy for example find it very important to have boundaries without explaining those boundaries. This advice is repeated somewhat dogmatically throughout the book. I’m not certain that it’s the best way to go, but I am sure the discerning reader will make up their own mind about this.

Similarly, the author takes a strong stance against anything declared as right or wrong. Only the existence of individual “truth“ is regarded as the panacea. I personally don’t agree with that either.

Nonetheless, there are many extremely valuable points made in this book. I certainly believe it is a wonderful complementary tool to raising children with traditional values. So I guess one could say that I loved the book with all its beautiful wisdom along with its horrible, rotten parts including the somewhat monotonous narration.

This book changed my life

I chose to read this book instead of reading a book called “Feeling Good” and I’m glad I did. I have read both now but I’m glad I read this book first. It completely changed my life.
