About this listen

Sinclair Rutherford is a young Seattle cop with a taste for the finer things. Doing menial tasks and getting hassled by superiors he doesn't respect are definitely not "finer things". Good police work and bad luck lead him to crack a case that changes quickly from a career-making break into a high-profile humiliation when footage of his pursuit of the suspect - wildly inappropriate murder weapon in hand - becomes an Internet sensation.

But the very publicity that has made Rutherford a laughing stock in the department lands him what could be the job opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to work with a team of eccentric experts, at the direction of a demanding but distracted billionaire. Together, they must solve the murder of a psychologist who specialized in the treatment of patients who give people "the creeps".

There is no shortage of suspects.

An awesome read and what promises to be a wonderful new series... This band of misfit detectives is utterly unique and enjoyable... The characters are all exceptionally rich and vibrant, especially Rutherford, Max, and Sloan... The quirkiness and humor could not be done w/ more pinache and vim, while remaining rooted... The pace and flow of the story are conducive to binge reading;) You'll find yourself laughing regularly, and chuckling even more... The whodunit and howdunit is fun, but not complicated... Most will figure it out quickly, but this is a story of characters more than anything and they will suck you in immediately, and take you on one helluva fun read... The narration is excellent and accomplishes changing tones and viewpoints beautifully... Worth the credit w/o a doubt.... Hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this delicious piece of ear candy;).

Fun Stuff

What did you love best about The Authorities?

This was very good - in the absurdist style of Douglas Adams or Janet Evanovich. The setting here is detective novel (no sci fi).

What did you like best about this story?

The main character is great - a nebbish person constantly under fire and subjected to various humiliations. He is able to rise above the issues and triumph. Also - hilariously funny.

Which scene was your favorite?

The sex toy arrest. (Don't worry, the book is not overtly sexual.)

Interesting characters, good story

I really liked this story and I didn't have a problem listening to it. The performence is great. The story is a little bland at times, but never completely boring. My favorite parts were picturing Max "fighting" people. It would be great to see in a movie or tv show. I hope there is another book with a slightly more interesting story now that the characters are developed and have established relationships. Overall I would recommend.

Besotted

I am in love, yes! I am besotted with the wit of the humor, delighted by the characters and addicted to the lines of the story.

Honestly I found myself laughing non stop in so many parts of this book. This narrator Luke Daniels is hi. larious.

I wish I had more. I'm now going to be spending a good hour or tens of hours searching for similar books.

If I don't resurface, send help.

Scott Meyer + Luke Daniels = A Great Time!

I love this author’s sense of humor, storytelling and world building (more so with his other books)! And then to couple it with Luke Daniel’s timing and delivery, soooooo good! It’s almost as if Scott’s books were written for Luke to narrate.

Waiting For The Next One

This was an interesting story hope to see another one soon.

It was kind of far fetched but was a fun listen. The narrator did a great job with all the different characters.

Funny and original but without depth

I just finished my second listen to this book, the first was around two years ago. Returning to it I realized two things, it was better than I remembered it, and I remembered hardly any of the story.

The comedy really works. It was at a couple of places laugh out loud funny, and better yet, constantly entertaining. The characters and premise are strange and off enough for me to recommend this book to anyone wanting a slightly strange comedy detective story, but it never steers off into the completely weird or absurd.

The characters are lovable but flat, with completely transparent motives and drives. No conflicted relationships, no surprising depth, or anything else to distract you from what this book wants to do, which is make you laugh both at and with its characters and conversations.

Luke Daniels does an excellent job with the narration, as he usually does.

All in all I’ll probably listen to this again in a couple of years for a couple of hours of solid entertainment.

lackluster compared to Magic 2.0

from someone who absolutley loved the magic 2.0 series, I was slightly disappointed by The Authorities. It was entertaining but not the same level I had come to expect from Meyer given how much I enjoyed all three of his books from Magic 2.0. All in all, it's a decent listen but hard to recommend when there are other better books.

Should Be in Fantasy or Sci Fi

Not very plausible and the characters were posed as in props. The story was alright and would be interesting if it weren't for the characters. I stuck with it as it does entertain like a TV sit com.
