About this listen

In The Bank War: Andrew Jackson, Nicholas Biddle, and the Fight for American Finance, historian Paul Kahan explores one of the most important and dramatic events in American political and economic history, from the idea of centralized banking and the First Bank of the United States to Jackson's triumph, the era of "free banking", and the creation of the Federal Reserve System. Relying on a range of primary and secondary source material, the book also shows how the Bank War was a manifestation of the debates that were sparked at the Constitutional Convention - the role of the executive branch and the role of the federal government in American society - debates that endure to this day as philosophical differences that often divide the United States.

The book is published by Westholme Publishing. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks.

History brought to life!

Even though I'm not normally a history buff, this book about the bank wars was told in enough of a story like fashion that it held my interest. It was fascinating to see how partisan things were even back then. I've recommended it to friends who have an interest in money and banking.

Niche topic brought to life by narration

Have you ever had a class in school where a really good teacher, rather than the subject matter itself, brought it to life? The excellent narration by Mr. Cram piqued my interest in what turns out to be a vital aspect of American history. A must for anyone interested in financial history.

Bank Apologist

Makes no mention of who exactly owned the shares of second bank and makes Biddle out to be a saint even though he was a shill for the Rothschilds
