About this listen

New York Times Best Seller

Sharon Stone tells her own story: a journey of healing, love, and purpose.

“Not your typical Hollywood autobiography. Brutally honest, restless and questing.” (O, The Oprah Magazine)

Sharon Stone, one of the most renowned actresses in the world, suffered a massive stroke that cost her not only her health, but her career, family, fortune, and global fame. In The Beauty of Living Twice, Stone chronicles her efforts to rebuild her life and writes about her slow road back to wholeness and health. In a business that doesn’t accept failure, in a world where too many voices are silenced, Stone found the power to return, the courage to speak up, and the will to make a difference in the lives of men, women, and children around the globe.

Over the course of these intimate pages, as candid as a personal conversation, Stone talks about her pivotal roles, her life-changing friendships, her worst disappointments, and her greatest accomplishments. She reveals how she went from a childhood of trauma and violence to a career in an industry that in many ways echoed those same assaults, under cover of money and glamour. She describes the strength and meaning she found in her children, and in her humanitarian efforts. And ultimately, she shares how she fought her way back to find not only her truth, but her family’s reconciliation and love.

Stone made headlines not just for her beauty and her talent, but for her candor and her refusal to “play nice,” and it’s those same qualities that make this memoir so powerful. The Beauty of Living Twice is a book for the wounded and a book for the survivors; it’s a celebration of women’s strength and resilience, a reckoning, and a call to activism. It is proof that it’s never too late to raise your voice and speak out.

Hit by A Stone

An honest, sometimes gut wrenching memoir, as told by Stone herself. Sharon stone bears all, from her childhood traumas, to the perils of being a beautiful woman in a male dominated industry. I always liked Sharon Stone, but damn she literally and figuratively lays it all out in the open. Not many people can do that, and I applaud her. Note - this is not a happy glamour celebrity tale and deals with some very serious issues.

Years of Living Dangerously

After hearing Sharon Stone recently interviewed by Oprah for 'Super Soul Sunday', I uploaded her new book. On a road trip last weekend, I popped in this Audible for the journey. I love the intimacy of memoir and Sharon's bravely revealing book packed a wallop. I recently sent out a newsletter for my business where sometimes I discuss any current Audible books I am loving. Here's what I wrote:

"The Beauty of Living Twice" is quite extraordinary. Although I was a casting director for many years, I didn't really know her back story other than she was a devotee of the famous acting teacher, Roy London. She was a working-class girl with Irish roots living outside of Amish country in Pennsylvania. Her honest exploration of her family's long-held secrets gives you a new perspective into this woman's not-so-idyllic life.

Apart from her known beauty as a mega-wattage model & super-star, she is a down-to-earth, bright, strong, resilient, articulate, hard-working feminist – as well as a mother of three adopted boys – who is now standing up and speaking out on incest and abuse from her family lineage. She grew up thinking her mother didn't love her - and came to find out that wasn't true. Her mom was guarding long-held secrets. She got married at 16 to escape an unspoken life. She tried to instill a cold work ethic of self-sufficiency and integrity for her daughter's to survive. Sharon just didn't know why.

She generously shares lessons learned from healing her own near-death experience – recovering from a brain aneurysm in 2000 - a humbling experience with 1% survival odds. She has definitely used her practice of Buddhism, as well as her basic instincts to heal, to survive the misogyny of the Hollywood system, and to fully appreciate her journey in life, in love, her mom, her family, and her foray into adoption as a single mom– as well as do what she can to help heal the suffering of so many broken souls on the planet suffering with HIV/Aids, homelessness, incest and human sex trafficking – as well as other causes that matter to her. She is the real deal.

Crying or Trying

It seemed as if Ms. Stone would begin to cry at the beginning of her childhood and adult anecdotes and recover with the sentence ending period. I don't doubt that tears came previously from sadness, pain and grief. It seemed like she was trying to relive those moments for emphasis. The middle section of her story was slow listening for me. Overall I enjoyed the reading of and the messages within her story with those two exceptions. She has lived and is living an exceptional life.

Courageous heart

To listen to the ebb and flow of Sharon’s journey with the emotive echo of the experience is to journey with her, in solidarity & in grace. Courage, tenacity, and pure grit are woven through her narrative & emblazoned on us all is the transmission she brings of choosing love. Timely & true is the resonance I feel having shared the space with her raspy voice tempered with a humor outrageous in its alacrity. Listening at times with tears and with tingles of recognition. Thank you for baring your heart & allowing each of us to cheer you on in this dance of life.

Excellent story of strength courage survival and forgivenes

I picked this book up in the airport bookstore and didn’t buy it because it was only available as an expensive hardback. Then I found it on audible and listened almost non-stop. One of the best autobiographical works I’ve read.

Brutally, Beautifully Honest

I enjoyed hearing the story of a woman who I have grown up watching in movies. I am a child of the '70s. And I experienced too many of the same things that she talks so bravely & honestly about. I appreciate her vulnerability. God bless her & her family!
