About this listen

Murder, mystery, and a dog, and cat, of distinction.

A dazzling ball in a rooftop ballroom in one of the most prestigious mansions in the country. Dancing, music, champagne, ravishing ball gowns, priceless jewellery...and murder.

Jack Dutton died in the dark. Why? Who hated him enough to kill him? Why had he made a list of gemstones and their prices? What was he guilty of? Dutton had been a handsome war hero, but tragedy surrounded him, and his nature had always been unpredictable. When Lennox and Swift begin peeling away the layers of deceit, they uncover some vile secrets, secrets that have already led to Dutton's murder, and it's not long before there's another.

Belvedere House hosts the highest of high society, and yet even among its glittering halls, evil creeps in to catch the unwary, and the unwitting.

Major Heathcliff Lennox: ex WW1 war pilot, six feet, three inch, tousled dark blond hair, age around 30, named after the hero of Wuthering Heights by his romantically minded mother–much to his great annoyance.

Lenox does it again!

Great book, great story and great narration as always with this series. By far, one of the best in the cozy mystery category. My only complaint was the quality of the audio. Particularly in the beginning, it seemed as everyone except Lenox was talking in a tunnel. It was a bit echo-y and sounded distant. Also, the voice of Florence was so damn quiet I couldn't make out what she was saying most of the time. In future books, it would be great if there could be less disparity in volume between Lenox and Florence.
I must say too, I enjoyed the earlier books more, prior to the wives coming into the picture, because the play/banter between Lennox and Swift was livelier, funnier, lighter and more disarming which kept your attention as well as moved the story along. These later books, with the wives in the story, find Lenox and Swift far too serious and dark in mood. Hopefully, the writer can keep their communications with each other funnier and lighter.

Captivating mystery once again

Best author, best narrator. This mystery didn't disappoint! Each Heathcliff Lennox book tops the next. Keep writing Ms. Menuhin!

Great story!

I have listened to this Narrator numerous times and for some reason he sounded tired or bored?? His voice for one character was fingernails on the chalkboard. Screechy high and whiny. Yeah that was great.

Yet another great one!

Very satisfying lesson as always. Great plot and sub plots. The characters are Sterling. I hope there will be more of these.

Tongue and cheek English mystery

I have read all the Heathcliff Lenox mysteries and find them to be great fun and wonderful “who done it” books.

Charm and suspense

This is a solid edition to the Lennox series. There weren’t any earthshaking surprises, but there is a nice tease for the next book. Great narration as always with Sam.

1out of 2 isn’t bad.

I enjoy the H. Lennox series. This was particularly interesting due to the archaeological dig that was occurring as the murders unfold.

Love the narrator and characters

I really enjoy listening to the Heathcliff Lennox series—Sam Dewhurst-Phillips does a fantastic job with the narration, bringing each character to life. This is the 11th book in the series, and overall, the story was engaging. That said, some of the recurring themes are starting to feel a bit worn, like suspects constantly questioning Swift and Lennox’s competence, or Swift’s overly pedantic references to Scotland Yard.

However, other familiar elements still feel fresh and charming—Mr. Fogg, Percy, Tubbs, and Lennox’s ever-loyal butler continue to add warmth and humor. The mystery itself was solid, and as always, the vivid descriptions of scenery, food, and fashion really enrich the experience. And of course, Heathcliff being his quirky, delightful self is always a highlight—though I still struggle to picture him as a blonde!
